Seats in GLE...too narrow?

What does everyone think of the seats in the new GLE? They seem kinda narrow to me....especially for a car that is wider than before. I thought the new car would feel more spacious from the driver's seat...it doesn't. Sitting in the new car...vs old GLE/GLS models (doing back-to-back in the showroom)....new seats don't feel as comfortable...and because of the contour...I seem to be sitting somewhat on the bottom side bolsters X5 and Cayenne seats felt much more comfortable to me. Wondering what other people think? I'm just a regular athetic build FYI (6'1'' 210lbs). Haven't driven it yet but love the car otherwise...

Have you considered the multicontour seats? Those have adjustable side lumbar supports and more thigh supports over standard seats so they are much more comfy.

Ron.s 04-20-2019 03:04 PM

Mine with the Multi Contour and a lot of adjustments are very comfortable and width is not a problem. Haven’t tried the heated massage function (or any of the others) but on a cold day it might be nice.

Will have to track down one with the multi-contour seats. Not many "fully" spec'd ones around now but want to try these seats. Do they let you adjust the side bolsters on the bottom of the seat? Glad you are liking them though....hopefully I will too! Thx for the input!

I’m in day 2 with mine and didn’t know the bolsters were adjustable. There are several switches on the door and a bunch more settings in the system. One safety feature is the seat moving you away from the door in case of side impact. That is probably done by the bolsters.
The bolsters on the seat bottom are not very high compared to our Audi. I had to go look again, they are pretty tame for bolsters. I haven’t compared them to the other seats so don’t know if they are much different.

Ron.s 04-21-2019 10:34 AM

Only the upper Side Bolsters are adjustable. They come set at 0 scale of 0-10 and any adjustment makes them narrower.

Which seats in the pre-2020 GLE are you comparing? I am 6’ and a good bit less than 200lbs and the standard MB-Tex seats in the GLE350 are what I describe as “roomy”, both for seat bottom and seat back including side bolsters.

In the UK we don't get any choice of seats, all UK GLE'S have the AMG package with Nappa leather, the one I test drove was very comfortable.

Arrie 02-19-2020 02:00 PM

I had a 2011 E350 with MB TEX. Driver seat was the drive dynamic one. After a year swapped the car to my current 2010 E550. Same seat but with leather. No difference in comfort.

I agree the seats are a bit hard and I have been thinking about adding some cushion on the seat part. Back support is good as it is.

For the moderator:

This reply was to a thread in W212 forum but for some reason it jumped here. Can it be moved to W212 under “A Modest Proposal”?

The. Multicontour seats are the exact same as on the S-Class and GLS-Class. They are the best seats Mercedes makes. If they are too narrow then no Mercedes will accommodate you.

American brands like Cadillac and Jeep may have wider seats.

Can I laugh at that or are you being serious?

Sadie has the Dynamic Multi-Contour seats covered in designo sand nappa leather. I find them, and Sadie's ride, exceedingly comfortable! Since she's an E400, she has the sport-tuned suspension and the more burble-y exhaust system. I do tend to play with the seat position, lumbar adjustment, and seat back angle when on long drives. Changing positions can be helpful!

I have noticed one difference between my E400's seats and my wife's Jaguar XJL's seats. The Jag's seats are their top of the line model with an adjustable seat pan that can be lengthened or shortened for more leg support for driver's with longer legs. The dynamic multi-contour seats have an adjustment for the seat cushion in the on-screen COMAND menu that's almost as good. See attached in Seats, subsection Adjusting the seat cushion. For tall drivers and people with long legs, this adjustment might help. I don't know about that because I'm rather short. But supporting your entire leg might help relieve some discomfort if you are tall.

I attached pages 56 and 57 from the COMAND manual for your reference.

Seat,too,narrow in my 21 GLE63s

I have the same issue with the lateral support of the driver seat being too narrow. Still haven’t figured out how to adjust it. Don’t even know if it’s adjustable. Don’t understand why so many talk about their seats in MB sedans. I thought the AMGs are using the sporty seats therefore much narrower. BTW, I am not fat.

Someone please show me how to adjust the driver side lateral support for a GLE63s. I am too lazy to look through the manual.

Hit home upper right on the touch pad…scroll to Comfort…then to seat comfort. Then touch and drag the button up/down right/left for lumbar that comes set to zero. This will push your back out of the hole. Next go up to side bolsters and you can drag the setting up/down until you find something you like. I have the multi contour massaging seats…so those are my choices.
Mine came with zero on everything…not comfortable until you move the settings around.

Seat comfort

I have the Sport seats. I don't find them too narrow (I'm 5'-10", 190) but didn't like them compared to the same in my W166 at first. I seem to have gotten used to them. Others may find they adapt to the seats over time.

Thanks Ron. That solved it. It was set at 10 for some reason. Dragged it to 3. Feels great now. Love this board!

GLE AMG seats uncomfortable lateral bolsters!

I have the GLE 350 AMG package for interior and exterior. I find the lateral bolsters super uncomfortable and firm. I dont have the multi contour seats unfortunately. Anything I can do?

I felt the same way about the seats at first. It took a while but the side bolsters seem to have softened up and broken in.

Thank you for responding! I thought I was the only one. I leased it yesterday and was thinking about calling them to see if I can switch it out for the non AMG inside. But I guess I will just give it time.

I would start over with your new car, and reset everything in the seating position. Including the steering wheel placement, front bolsters and mirror settings. Over time you will get it better, but maybe not perfect.

Switching out seats would be difficult, since you don't own the car. You'd have to save the seats you took out and put them back in before your lease return.

This /\ for anyone who has not figured it out yet. Even though car was for the Wife, the sales persons first suggestion to me was seat adjustment. Then again I'm 6'1" 265lbs and much wider at top than the bottom :P

Since he has the Sport seats that come with the AMG interior, the side bolsters are not adjustable, just lumbar and the usual seat position/angle adjustments.

Seat bottom length is adjustable, I mis-spoke when I said "front bolsters." Don't know the technical term for that adjustment.

My point: Experiment with all the seat settings, including relationship to steering wheel and pedals.

Seat swap on a lease car might be impractical, although I'd still have my Macan if I had done that. I had no lease, loved the car but hated the seats.

Not to belabor the point, but seat bottom length is not adjustable on the Sport seats, unless you consider moving the lumbar in and out bottom adjustment.

Semantics. Just adjust the seat every which way. Including mirrors and steering wheel. Yes, I know the steering wheel is not part of the seat. (Are you sure the Drivers seat doesn't have adjustable seat bottom length?)

I'll post a Mercedes definition of "every which way" when I can find it. :)
