Finance & Insurance Department

At a typical dealer, is the F&I department a part of the sales department or a separate profit center? In negotiating a price with the seller, can such things as an extended warranty and/or pre-paid maintenance concessions be considered in lieu of a price reduction? If the departments are separate, the seller may not have the authority to make such concessions in the negotiation. OTOH, they may be more willing to go that route than leaving money on the table.

Just wondering.

Usually one and the same...but think of them as a separate sales persons. The finance manager can sell you things to increase the dealer profit margin after you've agreed to the "price". The true price is what you write the check for. That said, all things are negotiable, including an extended warranty and/or pre-paid maintenance. You may walk out on the deal at anytime, up until you sign the contract with the actual sales price.

Well - "usually" two DIFFERENT animals except where they intersect on Finance or Lease quote from F&I that will be presented to you by the Sales Dept.

If you have negotiated the path to the Mercedes you want - and to the "best price" - and the Finance or Lease quote that fits you - the "other MB F&I" stuff other than Exterior/Interior Packages offered by the dealer are relatively set MB profit margin to the dealer.

That said - if leasing pre-paid maintenance can be a solid "bargain" as "residualized" into your Lease.

You can check bottom price for Prepaid Service or Extended Warranty - with the VIN# of the Mercedes you are looking to buy - by calling oft-mentioned Jeff Jackson MB Louisville (502) 894-6829 - that dealership maximizes their F&I profit with Mercedes by selling "more" warranty/prepaid maintenance so they generally have great cost quotes especially on the warranty side.

Worth mentioning that pre-paid maintenance can’t be residualized on AMG’s. Otherwise they are a decent savings. Would also make sure that any add-ons services are transferable.
