48-volt battery
#256
Yes, I just checked my exchange invoice where the dealer switched out my battery and it was the same number as Ron’s posted number on his warranty invoice. Thanks for posting that for everyone Ron!

Just had a call from my dealer as a point of interest, they replaced 2 - 48 volt batteries on a 2021 E450 and a GLE 450. Both batteries were the OLD batteries that were replaced with the NEW battery.

The alternator generates AC current that is converted to DC current via the rectifiers to charge the 12V battery. You can not convert DC power from one voltage to another via a transformer as you do with AC. The DC current must be converted through an inverter [Square wave generator] back to AC transformed to 48 VAC and then through a rectifier back to 48VDC. There could be a malfunction in the second conversion and that would cause repeated battery failures by not recharging them properly.

In addition, automakers are also adding tons of new infotainment options and auxiliary safety systems (adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping system, blind-spot monitoring system) to the car. Plus, you have heated seats, a steering wheel, and a windshield. Needless to say that standard 12-volt methods are on the verge of exhaustion. Just at this point, 48-volt systems are activated to help meet the need for additional onboard power. Some, for example, use a 48-volt battery to power the electric anti-roll bar system for better handling, while others use it to control the electric supercharger. I've also heard that you should contact gordonpowers.com.au for breakdowns.

I took my GLE in for a new windshield this week, and asked the Service Manager about 48v batteries.
He said they have seen a few, and that every one happened soon after they were delivered, and in every case there has been no recurrence of 48v problems.
He also said that the Battery Management System is updated with OTA updates, and that he would check to see if mine had the latest update.
He is a reliable source, and I trust him.
BTW I have 7,000 miles on the 53. Built 3/21.

This straight up sucks. Less than 2 weeks ago I had a check engine light which was a EVAP leak and now it seems I have the same battery issue that seems to be plaguing these GLE's. Go out this afternoon to start the car to go to the store and nothing....just nothing but that notice. I tried to see if there was anything I could do but since it's in my garage and no way to get a car over to it and you can get it in neutral or the electronic parking break off I couldn't push it out to even see if jumpstarting it is a thing. I don't have the patience tonight to wait up all night for a tow truck so will do it tomorrow. The last time I had the vehicle looked at they said there is a month long wait for a loaner...I better hear a different tune this time since it's a much worse issue where it just doesn't start but I'm doubtful. I still want to be positive so I'll let even know if it is the battery or if it's something else. If it is I'll let everyone know what the process is like for me as well...What a hot topic...Oh yeah for a bit on context. My GLE 450 was built on May 17th of 2021 and delivered on May 28th to NC. I have 3200 miles on it already so it's better than some I guess but not what I expect.

Brand new 2021 GLE 63s - same issue
On Sunday I tried to start my 2021 GLE 63s - it wouldn’t start & I received the same warning that many of you have. It had to be drug out of my garage & put on a flatbed. They said it is the 48 volt or the wires that connect it. (Sorry not a car expert). I wish I had looked inside the door @ my exact build date. I picked my car up in late July. They are ordering parts from Germany, as they had to for many of you. Probably without the car for several more weeks. Reading this thread has given me some great info & insight, so thank you all! I love the car - great mix of power & luxury. Hoping I get it back before the new car smell is gone.

Hi everyone. I’m in Canada and I’m also having the 48 volt battery issue with my 2021 Gle53. Took delivery of the car in February and it has just over 12,000 km. Issue started last week Tuesday the 10th, car wouldn’t start for over an hour. Just before dragging it onto the tow truck it started. I drove directly to the dealership. After three days of diagnostics, Mercedes said change 48 volt battery. Battery is on back order, no idea when it will arrive. Call my dealership today for an update, the service manager informed me the battery is on order and they’re putting the car back together so I can drive it until the battery arrives. I told him I don’t think that would be a good idea. Any input will be appreciated. Thanks for all the info already in the treads

The strange thing is the service tech said it’s a possibility the issue will repeat itself at anytime without warning. Now My concerned is, do I want to take that risk or just leave the car at the dealership until the battery is changed.
