Just a quick update from me. I had my 2021 GLS 580 in service back in August 2021 for the 48v battery error message issue. My engine never shut down but my AC stopped working. The dealer completed a software update only, no battery replacement and so far over a year later there has been no reoccurrence of the error messages or any other issues. Since the software download, I’ve kept the ECO start/stop turned off religiously. Not sure if that was a contributing factor to the issue….just playing a hunch.

Do you know if it really was a software update? According to some posters the “update” is just clearing codes and resetting everything and crossing fingers that it doesn’t come back. Below was from May 2022.

I wonder if the GLC poster, who I quoted, already had the latest controller software since he had a 2022 MY. Anyone know when they updated that software?

Just as a reference point, when I took my 2021 (purchased in May 2021) in couple of weeks ago for the window trim recall, the SA said there was no software update available for the 48V battery. I specifically asked him to check.

GLS 450
I have a 2021 GLS 450 and took delivery in July of 2021 and it now has 23,000 miles. It has had a history of stalling and I'm trying to figure out what to do.

History of stalling: My GLS stalled once right after I bought it (Sept. 2021) and that brought up a battery warning. I think I called MB roadside, but cancelled that request once I got it restarted and took it to the dealer who checked it out and found nothing. It stalled twice within days of each other in May 2022 and those two times the dash just lit up with all of the lights and check engine was stayed on. Both times were in traffic. After that, my dealer did a "software update". It stalled last Monday 01/16/2023 while I was waiting for oncoming traffic, auto shutoff kicked in, I think the car restarted enough to move me across the oncoming lane and then it stalled in the oncoming lane. It also seemed like it took more to re-start it, but that could have been since I started to roll backwards down a hill and had my Son in the backseat freaking out because there was a car coming at us. It restarted, I disabled the auto shutoff and got it to my dealer. They have had the car for over a week now and cannot come up with an issue. I reported the car to the NHTSA. I have told them, in less forceful language, that my Wife and I cannot pick the car up unless a solution is found. I read on MBWorld that I'm not the first to encounter this stalling issue, but the dealer says it is the first they've dealt with in an MB. (They have had an Audi have this issue.) I'm new to MBWorld and so maybe this isn't the place to post this, but I'm very frustrated. I really, really like my GLS. Does anyone know if people who have purchased 2023's are having these issues???

Wow, that sounds dangerous. I would not take it back either unless they come up with a cause and solution.

They have not been able to identify the issue on mine and they've had it for 19 days. Tech said that it did not show any codes this time, but the has been investigating and the latest attempt was to open the all the solenoids in the transmission? The thought was that when it auto shuts down that when it goes to restart, maybe it is restarting the transmission in a gear that kills the car? I do not recall the transmission being jerky or having issues. My service advisor also said that he was opening a case with MBUSA to see where to go from here. I live in Iowa and our lemon law applies to cars that are less than 2 years/24,000 miles. I'd prefer not to hire representation and go through all of that. I'm also getting close to the mileage where lemon law won't be an option if they don't figure it out. So far, they cannot assure my Wife that the problem is solved and that it is the safe car we purchased to haul our family around in.

How has this been working for you so far? I might need to do the same soon.

So far so good. It's been two years (two five-month periods from June-October) and have never gotten any battery warnings or had any issues. Vehicle sits inside an air conditioned garage if that might make any difference.

^ Would agree with this - my GLE sits in the garage (temp controlled) most of the year, unfortunately. Only about 4 to 5,000 miles put on it per year. So it sits on the CTek 5 for most of the year. I did have the 48v battery fail in December, but can't imagine the smart charger had anything to do with that!

We were driving to church after dinner this evening when it displayed a 48 volt system failure notice, and then the CEL came on. We were in a residential neighborhood only a few blocks away from church, so I kept driving. The next message was in red saying the coolant was too hot and to stop the vehicle. We were in limp home mode, but since we were only two blocks from the church parking lot, we decided to try to make it there, which we did. We called the MB help center, and they dispatched a tow truck, which arrived in about two hours. In order to load the vehicle onto the truck, I tried starting the car, so I could put it in neutral and release the parking brake. To my surprise, it started right up, and the driver was able to load it, and he’s now on his way to the dealer. We have about 15,000 miles on the vehicle and took delivery in October 2019. I’ll post an update after we hear from the dealer.
These symptoms are identical to what happened to me, in my 2022 CLS450 4matic, first this past July (2023), and now again in September. The vehicle had 14,500 miles on it during the first occurrence. It is now at the dealer, and I have submitted a report to NHTSA. I'm not sure what to do when/if I get the vehicle back in working order. I simply cannot afford to have my car leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere, and as a salesman covering two states in the southwest, I drive through a lot of "nowhere". This is simply unacceptable.
