Tire noise on deceleration - Pirelli 21s

I only have been able to put about 400 miles on my GLE, but am loving it so far. So much so, I’m wondering why I wasted time on the Aviator. Every switch, stalk, texture, material, etc is so much better than I’ve experienced in the past. Even the key fob has a higher quality feel.

Some differences are notable. The GLE has an actual gas cap. How quaint! Couple Lincoln pluses are the track forward button on the steering wheel, leather stitched airbag cover and turn signals showed up in the HUD. Also, the external cameras in the Aviator have convenient sprayers, and it’s rear wiper is hidden in the spoiler, lending the rear to a cleaner look.

Anyway, on the GLE, I have been hearing some (rear) tire noise on deceleration, which seems out of place for this vehicle (that, and the fact you can hear the rear camera deploying, for some reason - should be silent) and upon investigation I found out that the tires were significantly overinflated. I assume this is due to a sloppy PDI, but I have lowered them significantly to the recommended light load pressures. The ride is much better, even with the air suspension, but I still hear tire tread harmonics while slowing down to a stop. Not super loud and no vibration whatsoever, just sound in the cabin. It might just be due to the steamroller tires on the back.

Normal or might I have a bad tire?

There is a small sound of the electric ISG as it decelerates you. Could that be it?
There is a corresponding green indicator in the tach part of the instrument cluster that shows amount of electric retardation.
Is there a correlation?

No, I have not correlated the level of the green charging indicator with the noise. I’ll do that.

I want it to be clear that it sounds like big tires slowing to a stop, as in the last few seconds of deceleration at a stop sign. I wouldn’t imagine a Mercedes would allow that into the cabin. And I have the acoustic package, FYI.

Make sure you use the tire pressure recommendations from the gas filler cap and not the door jamb.

I have the big tires (Pirellis) on mine also but don't hear any noise from it as I decelerate.

Having had my GLE for only 3 days, I hear, on most stops, a noise when decelerating as well. For mine, I wouldn't say it's a tire noise but reminds me more of a brake noise although the brakes feel fine. I haven't been able to get out and bed them in yet so maybe that will take care of it.

I can test that theory as well by slowing and letting it coast to see if it's brake-related. I will say, there is more brake dust on the wheels in the two weeks I've had the vehicle than others I've had for years. Hopefully it's a break-in (brake-in) thing.

It's a Mercedes thing. The pads are excellent however and for my driving style etc. last up to 100,000km on my last 2 Mercedes.

It might be actual brake noise. If you look at your 48 volt ISG meter it shows half charging coasting & full charge with brakes applied. When you are approaching a vehicle while coasting mine starts gently braking according to that meter. At first I thought it was just more ISG charge but confirmed that the brake lights come on. This might be part of the safety system, I have DAP as well and follow distance set to max.

Mercedes & BMWs I've had are bad for brake dust unless you get the carbon ceramic ones. Be aware if you use the advanced driving features it will be worse as the brakes are used for lane correction, etc.

Audi also uses brakes on some models for Torque Vectoring. The rear inside wheel gets mild braking to slow that side. It makes for better handling in corners but shorter rear brake life. Since the fronts normally wear faster than the rear it might not change replacement times.

With 400 miles on the car, nothing is even close to breaking in yet. As stated above, get your tire inflation correct on all four corners and drive it.
