You might post info on your current tires. There are several options for the 450. In most cases you can get MO (Mercedes Original) aftermarket tires through TirecRack, Discount Tire, Costco, etc for a competitive price.

Just a note though, the dealer beat all of the above on price for my winter tires. MO-1 for AMG.

Not specifically 450 related but my 580 came with Michelins, lasted about 12k, and I replaced them through tire rack with continental. So far they have not been bad but I do think they jump around a little more than the Michelins. When I say jump around, I think the GLE has a very bouncy rear end over bumps. Not so much up and down but side to side over bumps. It’s probably because of the larger low profile tires though.

Interested in this conversation. I have the 21" rims on our GLE 450 and have continentals. We've had a few issues with curb rash on the rims and these tires have ZERO rim protection. NO real comlaints on tire noise and life, but I dont really expect tires to last long on these cars as I think the 4matic tears them up.
I'd love to find a tire that has a bit more sidewall protection for the rims.

Great Question. I only got 10,000 on the original Cooper Discover ties, so I ditched them as fast as I could. I tried to leave a negative review on the Cooper tire website, but the immediately removed it saying, my review didn't meet meet their standards. Yes... I'm sure. They can't be trusted.
I wanted something soft & quiet for my GLE450 with EABC, so I went to Discount Tire and ordered 4 Continental Cross Contact ties. It took a little time, but they arrived, and I'm really happy with them.

The lack of sidewall is mostly a factor of having the wide wheels. Put the same tire on an 8 1/2” wheel and you get sidewall bulge. I have this exact setup for my winter wheels…8 1/2” wheels-square setup though with front and back running the front tire size. My guess is the wide wheels are for looks and also to improve handling since there will be less sidewall flex.

I too was surprised there was no built in rim protector on the Scorpions. Really like the tires otherwise and hope to find an equivalent with added protection to replace them.

Hey everyone, I also have the OEM Coopers and man they are all chewed up! Only have 12k miles and they look horrific. Like someone gouged the treads with knife. This has never happened to me on other MBs I’ve owned and I’m a cautious driver, so I’ll just conclude that the Coopers (Discover) suck. The 600 tire tread wear indicator is a joke.
That said, I’ll run with the advice on this forum. Continentals or Michelins? Is there a consensus? Thanks in advance for the latest advice!

Rather than ask us “somewhat biased consumers”, why not look at professional reviews? They test back to back in similar conditions with less subjectivity! Tire Rack does a good job for one source, there are others.

I’ve used both brands, including various models of Michelin Pilots (I’ll compare the A/S I had to the A/S Contis) and Continental DWS06 A/S. They were both great but did have some drawbacks.
The Continentals were very quiet and gripped well, especially on wet roads, but the compound was very soft on that model. It would pickup nails and screws like there’s no tomorrow. They did get harder as they worn down but stayed relatively quiet.
The Michelin Pilot Sport+ A/S were equally as quiet and gripped well while new but one thing I noticed is that they grew louder as they worn down and lost some wet weather grip. They weren’t nail magnets like Continentals, though. These lasted a little longer, too.

I must say, that I was rather surprised that my 450 came with Coopers, as I was expecting Michelins. They do seem to be a bit nosier. I've always been a Michelin guy, no, not the "Michelin man", until my previous SUV - BMW X-5. It came with Run Flat Scorpions, which were also nail magnets. The biggest issue I had was blowouts. 3 blowouts in 5 years. Never had one in 40 years of driving. And not having a spare made it darn inconvenient. Luckily, I purchased a tire plan, so drove the hell out of the flats to get to a dealership.
I am interested in hearing opinions on this. I have 14K on the Coopers and the look like new; although mostly highway mileage.

Honestly I have higher regard for the real world experiences and opinions from the folks on this forum than found on Tire Rack. After all, the same tires behave and wear surprisingly differently on other vehicles, suspensions, driving habits, road conditions, etc. and their opinions will be based on “other” vehicles. I needed input on tires specifically for the ‘20 GLE450. Also from my experience the 4Matic tends to wear down the rear passenger side tire more than others (also experienced this on my GLE43). I think it’s just the way the drive system is biased, but the damage is done; need to price up both the Continentals and Michelins. Thanks to everyone who weighed in.

Replacement tires
Original 3 1/2 year old 21" Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Seasons on my 450 are performing and lasting extremely well. 18k miles (alternated with Winters) and still have a uniform 8/32" tread front and 7.5/32" rear.

What is going on here? 13k miles, passenger front, rubber has become brittle like to the point you can peel it off by hand. Cooper tires? Never again!

That kind of wear and damage is typically caused by excessive heat. You see that a lot in race cars, with tires losing chucks.
Are your tires under inflated? Under inflated tires will operate at a higher temperature, often times much higher. It seems most of the damage is on the outside edge as well, which is sometimes indicative of under inflation.
