Mark up charge to place an order?

I visited a MB dealership in Houston asking about ordering a 2023 GLE450. The sales person told me there is a $5000 mark up to place an order. I am aware that in the current market, there is a mark up when purchasing an available vehicle on the lot, but was surprised to find out there is a mark up for placing an order as well. I have not check other dealerships but was wondering if folks on this forum came across mark up when placing a MB order?

I would go elsewhere. Call every dealership within 100 or even 200 miles and you'll find one willing to do MSRP or better. Just be blunt and upfront: I want to place an order for 2023 but I won't pay over MSRP.

Did you try negotiating? Make a written offer?

If consumers pay the ridiculous markups then stealers will charge them and get it… personally I’ve never paid msrp for anything and would not start now after more than 50 purchases. Patience and strong negotiating will win the day, it always has is my case. Just my $.02 but it’s currently a free country for those who want to reinforce negative behaviors.

Walk away. It's crazy to pay a markup for just ordering a vehicle. This is beyond crazy.

The 3 dealerships in my 40 mile radius (none are related) have a $5000 mark up on GLE 350 and $10,000 on GLE 450 (hard to find). This is currently encouraged by MBUSA as I found out last week when trading my 350 for a new 450.
I had the option to order but the lead-time is currently 7 months with many options being dropped for the sake of not delaying deliveries even more. Decided against the order. I was not informed that there would be a mark up on a build during the process.

Try doing a build online and send it to a different dealership for them to quote you.

I just ordered one in the Houston area with no markup charge (they mentioned that they don't have a markup even before I could ask them about it) -- on the SW side of town.

If they have a $5k starting point you've lost already. No chance of getting to $0.

Try negotiating. I know it's a Boomer thing, but there's a reason - it works.

Not necessarily. Price -- even with a $5K mark up -- is just an opinion.

One can just simply ignore the mark up and make an offer. That is your opinion.

One helps his position by making it clear he is going to buy (order) a car today, provided a suitable deal can be done. If not the car/vehicle he wants at this dealer than at another dealer. And have a list of various vehicles and dealers. Ideally the most expensive vehicle on the list and the #1 on the list should be the M-B you are seeking to order. The list does not have to be all M-B vehicles. And not to put too fine a point on it not all vehicles on the list need be ones you would seriously consider buying. They should be comparable to what M-B you are looking at but they don't have to be real alternatives.

The dealer must believe if he lets you walk out the door with no deal made he's lost you to another dealer.

Thank you for all the feedback, I thought they are being ridiculous, and you guys proved that I am not wrong.

I did not negotiate because the purpose of my visit was just to take a look at the GLE450 to see how I like the AMG exterior and check out the various options. I am not in a hurry and want to take my time to decide on the options. There are a few more dealerships in town that I will be reaching out to.

Yeah they give you the "your trade is worth more so it evens out". I refused to order from anyone wanting a premium. It won't be long they will be offering discounts again to move the vehicles.

This lines up with what I've experienced with the dealerships in Texas. Good and accurate info!

For $10,000, I could fly to any dealer in the country and drive the car back home and still be way ahead.

I hope you asked what type of sex work you receive for that five grand. Thank god for a global marketplace. Report this to mbusa and your local news. immediately. Take that dealer and put them out of business.

When I was shopping around, I found that almost all of the dealers with markups were outright obstinate and didn’t care if I shopped around. I asked the original dealer if they would price match one from 100 miles away for MSRP and they said no. So, I just purchased that 100 mile away one.

However, I did have some satisfaction later on showing up at that local dealer with my new car to buy floor mats. My sales advisor saw me and he was contrite enough and congratulated me on my car. I will browse their website and the car I originally wanted is still there unsold lol. Not sure if they were that greedy or that dumb or both.

2015 ML350 and 2020 GLE580
Just curious if it's an actual Mercedes dealership, do they all use Mercedes for financing? Looking to get a 2020 GLE580, found the same identical car at two different Mercedes dealerships. Didn't know if I need to check with both after negotiations on interest rate or if I can presume they're going to be the same. Also, any idea what current interest rates are with Mercedes - 800+ credit. Debating on checking with a local credit union. Our last car we financed through Mercedes but it's been years ago. Hate to not get the best interest rate on that expensive of a car.

If you’re in Houston, go to Star Motor Cars. Zero markup for factory orders.
This is my dealer BTW. Small family owned business with great service. Maintenance is also very reasonable. Just paid $300 for an “A” service yesterday on my GLE53 Coupe.

Cheers,

Dealers may have tie-ins with various lenders. Always ask, and good to have your own option in the pocket.

I was recently in at MB of West Houston talking to my sales rep about ordering a new GLE450 for my wife and they are selling at MSRP. I'd definitely find a new dealer if I were you.
