IMO both cars are complex hence one should expect to have many different settings. For BMW, I can hit setting and they are all there. Of course, some will take more than one step to get to. And that's why BMW's iDrive7 has eight buttons where you can assign to anything you want and can just hit to get to either a feature or setting you want. Lane keep assist is fine IMO. They also have different sensitivity levels. What caused you to trouble most likely is the steering assist. They also have different setting levels but I do agree steering assist can be abrupt and I do have that off. Since we're on assist topic, I have to turn blind spot assist off on the GLE. I know it's crazy to have to turn off that safety feature but it screams and scares the heck out of her, sometimes for no reason. I didn't believe her until I experienced it. Turning left at a light and it screams at you when you are on the left-est lane. I don't know what it senses but it happens quite a bit. It either sense the bushes or the car on the other direction. Even when turning into the garage, my garage is not even that steep but if screams like someone is going to get killed.
Turn down or mute the alert. You can also deselect the "Warn early all around" on the same settings area.

Regarding the crash alert, just don't crowd the intersection as much. That extra five feet you gain will almost certainly cause alerts. Loud ones.

I thought it re-enables on next start up, maybe I remembered it incorrectly and lane departure/assist was the one that gets re-enabled from start-up (other than auto start/stop)

Both remain as you have them set before shutting down.

"Active Steering Assist" is gentle and accurate, as long as lines are visible.
"Active Lane Keeping Assist" can be pretty violent, moreso if you approach the lane markings at an aggressive angle.
Like when you drop your phone and have Active Lane Keeping disabled.

One of the reasons I bought this car is safety. There is no argument of MBs history of safety innovations. There will always be some quirk or something that doesn't work exactly the way you want it to as that's not feasible. That's also true with any other brand. I want to have full use of all safety features therefore I turn nothing off. I can live with some minor annoyances. It's a very small trade off for safety to me.

I see, good to hear they changed it (or at least it is true on the GLE, I think the W213 E-Class automatically re-enables it next ignition cycle or after a few hours of car being off)

I see, it is your car and as long as it works for your needs and wants, then it is all good.

I just got a 5 series loaner car.

The interior and tech feels 2 generations behind my brother's E series.

Mercedes wins.

Yes it was the latest 5 series, because the 2024 isn't out yet.

No, he got rid of his Defender and bought the Mercedes.

Late to the thread, but at the time rear seat legroom was of great importance and this is where the GLE succeeds. Rear seat legroom is much larger than the X5 and I think is actually closer to the X7. The X5's backseat is pretty tight for its class. Otherwise can't go wrong with either car. I prefer the GLE's steering too, feels much less synthetic, and overall looks of the GLE are much classier and elegant versus the X5 which looks a bit cartoonish from the front and has some design quibbles.

Thanks for chiming in, did the facelift X5 change the opinion in terms of design or still the same, I understand facelift the leg room won't magically increase.

How do you get to that screen? I can't find it on my 2024 model.

We visited the Mercedes dealer to check out the GLE and liked it. We then went to the BMW dealer to check out the X5 and found it lacking when compared to the GLE and also their sales rep was a pompous *******!

You can drill down through menus to the Systems page.
But I press the 'car' icon on the console, to the left of the trackpad/palmrest.

It also gives access to the Lower When Getting In button.
That's on my '21.

Thanks, I should have RTFM. The vehicle needs to be started to access that menu. The depiction is a little different with my version of MBUX.

While your post seems irrelevant here, I wonder what exactly is behind. I don't know about these cars as much but a quick look shows the E's inside looks like GLE's. All features/tech's on GLE's are available on X5. Some features on X5 are not available on GLE's. These cars are comparable but if one wants to be picky about it, then X5 has more features whether one wants to think it's necessary.

I've never done a hard look comparison of features. What other features does the X5 have that's not in the GLE? Couple things I've noticed that I like in the X5 that doesn't exist in the GLE:
  • The split lift gate hatch
  • The automatic cargo storage cover

Isn't the split lift gate hatch first introduced on the Cullinan? I don't see many vehicles with it for example. What other vehicles come to mind with this?

Previous gen also has split gate. Other vehicles I'm aware of are Lexus LX, Ford Explorer. Some other vehicles have pop up rear windows that can be used in similar manner. It's convenient for some but their button could be placed at a better spot. Some use them to sit on while others like for grocery and alike purpose.

As I mentioned, some will argue the practicality of these features while others think they are great. But the purpose of this response is to stay BMW is not behind MB on features/techs as the other poster claimed.
- Remote start from the fob.
- Engine stays on when door is open
- Remote start can be done even when fuel is less than 1/3
- Plastic key
- Phone key that can be shared via a text too
- Car can be set up so it will unlock when you approach and lock when you walk away
- Wireless full screen CarPlay
- Built in Speed Cam
- An even road surface alert
- Rear seat belt alert
- Drive Recorder that can be used in case of an accident. MB has Dash Cam but one would have to start at the beginning of every ride.
- Eight assignable buttons that you can assign anything (setting or feature)
- A food tray for second row
- Iconic Sound
- Lastly wipers that actually work.

My wipers work fine, and the rest of those aren't worth anything to me, although many are standard on a GLE.

I value my driving experience, comfort and reasonable control placement. And looks.
The X5 is lacking in those areas. Especially driving experience. I don't want a goofy looking car in my garage.

Maybe I have a different definition of "fine". In fact I took mine in. They agreed it wasn't working the way it should. They "fixed" it. Guess what, they didn't. They cleaned them and now they're acting the same way.

Of course. And I respect that. It's a personal thing. But that's not the point of my post/argument. The other poster claims BMWs are two generations behind on features and techs.
