Possible Heated Steering Wheel Problem...

On my GLE the heated steering wheel seems finicky and I can't figure out any particular pattern. Sometimes it goes off within minutes and other times it doesn't. Owner's manual says how to turn it on and off and that's it. I'm pretty sure it's not affected by anything else. Anyone who has one noticed anything odd besides myself? I'll probably take it in to get it checked out.

I believe the heated steering wheel should remain on indefinitely (unlike heated seats), until switched off manually or until ignition is switched off.

If yours is switching itself off, then there's an issue.

It's possible the vehicle is detecting an electrical overload/fault, and therefore switching the circuit off. Hopefully the dealership can duplicate the issue and resolve for you.

Good luck!

Mine switches itself off sometimes and it will also do nothing sometimes like: won’t turn off or on.

The steering wheel is also affected by the ambient temperature. If the temp is 70 or above it won’t turn on or it will turn off if that temp is reached. The info is in the manual but it’s hard to find.

Good point, @PLINYELDER, I forgot about that. And while I couldn't see it specifically referenced in the 167 manual, I found it in a previous manual (W211), so I assume the functionality is still relevant.

Thanks for posting this. I think it is still relevant as mine will modulate off after some time.

That explains a lot. I’ve never seen that and learned something new. Thanks @mercedesbuff

No problem. I had issues with mine and after the dealer replaced all my buttons I found the actual prob. Mine is a 23 and if the outside temp based on the temp gauge is 70 or more, it wouldn’t turn on. I took it back to the dealer and showed him how it worked and the owners manual entry. He passed it on to the techs.

I do not have a GLE but my issues seem to be most closely related to this thread on heated steering wheel problems. First I have the AMG steering wheel in my E63 which is thicker than the regular steering wheel. It seems like the heat does not go all around the girth of the wheel. Only the outside part of the wheel heats up and the inside part ( where the seams and stitching are ) get no heat. With my older GLK, it heats nice and toasty all around, but this car has a thinner steering wheel. So did MB cheap out and use similar width heating elements for all cars and those of us who have the thicker AMG steering wheels just have to make do with no heat on the inner side of our steering wheels while the regular steering wheels get heat all around ? If so this is very annoying.

Next issue, on the AMG wheel, it will heat nice and toasty to start then switch itself off. I am fine with that ( same thing on the GLK) but when I try to switch it on again, the indicator light says steering wheel heat is on but it will not re-heat - it's really weak second time around. Once again this problem does not happen with the GLK. I can reheat up the GLK steering wheel just fine. So my high falutin E63 has inferior steering wheel heat to my GLK in every possible way ???

Very frustrating....
