Question Is it tricky to put this car into neutral?

It just jumps between D and R.

No, there is a detent before D & R. Stop pushing the stalk when you feel the detent.

It is somewhat tricky to do from D->N and easier from R->N.

. I found that gently applying upward force on the shifter till it actually switches works somewhat reliably. You do need to get used to it, maybe practice a bit, otherwise your car wash experience will be rather stressful

I occasionally accidently end up in N if I don't push far enough going from R to D or D to R.

You should feel a second click putting it down to D or up to R. Just don't push past it, that's N.

It doesn't "click" much going from D->N, it hard to feel the point of engagement. Going from R->N is easier as you do feel that middle position better. As for D->R, R->D, that's super easy, you just push it all the way up or down, no thinking involved. I actually like it way better than the center console gear shifters and got used to it like in a few days.

Huh, I have an older car (2014 E Class) with the same shifter and have never had an issue feeling the click going down.

You mean going "up" (D->N) ? D is the lowest position and you need to pull the lever "up" to go to "N". When you go "down", (R->N), you can feel it well. It doesn't "click", you just feel the resistance in the middle position once you hit it "middle floor". When you go "up", you can't feel much until you reach the "R", so you kinda have to "catch" it on these GLEs.
