Possibly due to no file compression?
Does the navigation use up space on the HDD?

A gaggle of MB's
Burn all your CD's on your PC/Mac to a USB stick - use USB port as a "jukebox" - buring to the hard drive takes too long and small capacity

Or load them all onto your smartphone. Works great for me.

Yes Sir. Get one of these. Plug it into the USB port in the center console and forget about it. It'll hold thousands of songs. Also, the low profile design doesn't get in the way or risk accidentally bumping it.

+1. I have used a compact USB stick for my last MB and my current MB and other vehicle. They work great for storing hundreds of songs, are quick to load and update library with new downloads.

12 CDs makes sense. The hard drive is 10GB. one CD is about 700MB so 12 CDs would be up to 8.4GB. Take into account the fact that the hard drive is formatted, therefore less than 10GB are available, and that some other applications (like navigation) also take up some space... The proper way to use your hard drive is to copy MP3s on it. You will multiply the amount of tunes you have by at least a factor 10.

Does anyone know if this hard drive is a solid state drive (e.g., maybe just a flash drive?), or is it a small mechanical hard drive? Thank you!

Good question. I can't find any mention in the Command Supplement Manual as to whether it's a HDD or SSD.
