Running Boards?
Anyone install aftermarket or the OEM running boards to their GLE? I'm considering one without and may want to install later. Thanks.

I did the ones just like the vanguard...I thought I wouldn't want them but after first without and now with...I am using them more than I thought...and I also have the lomo lowering module and still use them. It's just a pain getting in and out over the bolstered seats and I'm 6' 1"

We almost traded our current GLE for one that had all the option we wanted except the running boards. So I looked into it extensively and it's an easy job to DIY.

If you are set on getting running boards, I would get the MB ones which were engineered for the vehicle by the manufacturer. But that is just me - OEM usually has zero issues. You can find aftermarket that will work fine - I'm sure.
In my opinion, The GLE doesn't sit high enough for running boards to be effective. I have them on my GLE550e, but never need them - wife also. They may help a very small child? Style wise, they do look good???... |
I have a set I will sell you. I took them off a 2015 ML350 that has approx 22,000 miles. Will sell for 200 plus shipping. Probably cost you about 200 to get installed, but they are OEM Mercedes

I've got one better. What if we swap? I hate mine and would love to have the covers that come without the boards.

I would recommend just going OEM. If you plan on doing install later at the dealer you should check how much they will charge. I seem to recall my SA telling me the dealer charges a ridiculous price to install them later even though its probably not that much work.

Most find not having running boards is easiest to get in/out - test fit 1st with one of your parents - it's called "fanny 1st" entry

my kids use them all the time. I didn't have them on my old GL and now have them on the GLS and I am glad.

If a Ford truck can come standard with them and the mechanically challenged person I am can add them to my past 3 Tundras, then someone or MB should be able to make a kit to add them to our SUVs. If you ever used these things you will probably love them. They are so much more functional. They are wider, not as slippery, and actually lower to a good useful height. Permanent non power folding boards are too high and therefore by the time you step up to them you are almost already in the car. Power folding steps, like the ones AMP research produces fold down and out about half the height which makes a great useful step. Example. When my wife, and sometimes mother-in-law when I let her ride with me, get in my GLE they both step up and over the running boards (they are both short, about 5'1") but when I had the power fold steps on my Tundra, they loved them. Heck, I even step over my running boards now and when it rains, my pants do a great job of wiping the water and mud off the running board. I think we need to protest and form a march somewhere to demand power folding steps! Now remember, opinions are like ........, and everyone has one. |
