WTF! - a 2019 W166 chassis is coming? Has the W167 been delayed to a 2020 model for the US? I thought the 2019 was to be the W167?

I believe you are correct E55. Too many rumors on forums and publications. Mercedes isn't saying anything.

This is unprecedented for Mercedes, as this model has always been on a 7-year cycle, and I've had the first of them all ('98, '05, '12). I could conjecture that the switch to the straight 6 with mild hybrid and 48v electrical is taking them extra time to refine, and sales of the existing are still good, but that's just a guess. I cannot see them going a full model year with this. Maybe a debut of the now 2020 W167 at the LA show in November/December, with late Winter launch?

Germancar1 04-06-2018 12:45 AM

I would say that is right, late 2018 intro with early 2019 on sale date as a 2020 model.

Omission? Or undecided?, or hiding?

Noticed that the 19’ guide pictures don’t show the center stack, or the nav screen? Perhaps the “ refresh” of W166 get the new dash in 19, and the new motor in 20’? W167
or... they are not proud to show the older current dash remains...just wondering....Puuchase decision looming with uncertainty...

1. Changing the center stack just for a short model run would be a majorly expensive change and not reusable in the '20
2. Certainly the driver's instruments would change to a new digital display at the same time (with likely optional full-width digital dash)
3. If it was new they would highlight it, not hide the fact

no 550e for 2019 either

BACnMercedes 04-12-2018 04:11 PM

I hope this changes considerably or I may have to go to something else. Mine will be at the sweet spot for me to upgrade in about 8-9 months and I was really hoping to get into a new model GLE.

My dealer said short run of MY2019, with new model coming in calendar year 2019.

My dealer told me the same.

I was in MB Manhattan yesterday for my annual inspection and my salesman did tell me that the 2019 will be a short run and that 2020 is expected March of 2019. I don't know if that means announced date, but since my lease ends in April he said if needed we would extend a month or two if we need to wait for the 2020 which it appears will be the W167. When I ordered my 2016 GLE it was 2/9/2016 and I picked it up 4/9/2016 so I hope it will be the same lead time next year, or there will be stock to choose from.

A 2019 March release seems very early for a MY2020 vehicle but i'll admit it's not unheard of.
My 2016 lease is up Dec '18 so I don't think they'll let us extend it for that long. Adding with the increased chance we would go over the lease mile cap, it seems we will fall short of getting the MY2020 :-(

Tough spot to be in, nobody wants a brand new vehicle and then the whole model changes in a few months. When I shopped the GLE I was looking for a 2 row SUV with decent cargo which meant the GLE, X5, Touareg, and Grand Cherokee. The Jeep we had before had a lot of problems, Audi Q5 has too small a trunk, and the Q7 was a little too big for our street parking. Volvo XC90 was nice but also too big. Acura MDX wasn't in the same league as the GLE and when decked out was close to the same pricing. The VW drove the same as our Jeep and was cheaper than the MB but this was also when VW was being raked over the coals for their Dieselgate and we didnt want to deal with that company. Two new SUV's have since come out in this price range and size, the Jaguar F Pace and Land Rover Velar. I would take a look at both of those if you can't extend your lease, I haven't driven either and neither have Apple CarPlay but maybe they could be an ok alternative? This may be blasphemy in this forum. We do love our current GLE and will most likely get another, in fact depending on timing and pricing I'm hoping to look at the GLE53.

phoenixone 04-19-2018 10:34 AM

I've thought about the Velar but i've read/heard many times where people left Benz & BMW for Range Rover and vowed never to lease a Range Rover again and came back to Benz/BMW.

Yeah I haven't spoken to anyone that has a LR/RR and loved it, I figure its a new model and next year they would have ironed out the kinks maybe? We looked at the X3 and decided it was too small and the X5 was too much money (once optioned) compared to the GLE. Also, the GLE was a better ride. I have to hope the W167 will have LED headlights as standard, the option we will all want will be the full LCD instrument cluster. Time will tell.

The LED headlights not being standard burns me. What's worse, it's now a P2 option! GRRRRR! Want to hear another kicker? Dealer told me It's not even standard an the GLE AMG!!!!
Not sure if Benz saw that people like us on forums like this one warn people that they will regret not ordering their vehicles with LED headlights and figured they'd hit us for more $ by removing it as a stand alone option (Lighting Package $1300 in the past) and forcing us to pay for P2. In my opinion, the options in the P2 package are mostly silly and I prefer not to have them.

I have downloaded the 2019 GLE ordering guide and they're standard with the 63 and 63S, part of P2 with all other models.

Yes, sorry. I've should of pointed out that it is standard on the 63's but not 43's and lower.

All, new to the forum but was an avid reader when I owned my 1999 ML430 (still miss it). Luckily my 2009 ML350 and 2013 ML550 didn't give me too much (read: as much) trouble.

I was contacted by my dealer in in mid-February to be put on an "order list" for the upcoming W167. I was surprised to not hear anything from them since then, and after coming across this thread, I reached out and was told the same thing: short 2019 MY, late 2018 or early 2019 calendar year release for the W167 (as 2020 MY).

I'm sure the dealers are almost as disappointed as the consumers (mine was), but I'm hopeful that the delay will address the typical growing pains that accompany both face lifts and chassis changeovers. This is simply conjecture, but the future models section of MBUSA's website is rather crowded at the moment, and most of the models there aren't your typical 3-year face lift. As Mercedes continues its move to a more modular design approach, I see the MHA delay as a way to spread the risk of dramatic change over a greater period in time. I don't know about you guys, but the service drive at my local dealership is always packed, and I can only imagine how much worse it could get if all these new models released in such a short period of time. While this is just my opinion, it's probably a combination of things, including some things that we'll never know.

Regardless, I can only hope that a rather bland ordering guide for the 2019 MY indicates the time frame we've been told is accurate.

The 3rd generation Porsche Cayenne will be all new for the 2019 model year. Both the Cayenne 1st and 2nd generation ran for 8 years and now the W166 is a 8 year chassis with the W167 now coming as a 2020 model. I wonder if this has something to do with the change from 7 to 8 years for the W166 and moving the W167 to 2020?

Additionally,

"BMW is expected to introduce its redesigned X5 this year, as a 2019 model. The X5 M should arrive a year later, most likely as a 2020 model. Arriving around the same time should also be an X6 M."

Who knows outside of M-B, but I doubt the other manufacturers’ schedules had much influence. My guess is the switch to the new power train was the biggest thing. And I doubt it will be a full extra year; I’m expecting (hoping) for release early 2019.

Others release schedule is considered and the reason MBZ, BMW and Audi introduce their latest executive sedans, the E-Class, 5-Series and A6 in staggered years. 2017 (E-Class), 2018 (5-Series) and 2019 (A6) respectively. It's not a coincidence - manufactures rarely introduce competing models in the same year. I've seen this done for the last 3/4 generations of the German Manufactures and others makers. Heck, Ford would never introduce a new Mustang the same year Chevy introduces a new Camaro and vice-versa. New F-150 not released same year as new Silverado etc. etc. etc. Research will show the same for competing models like C-Class (2015), 3-Series (2012), A4 (2016) and throw in the Guilia (2017).
