GLE 400 - confusion
I'm a bit confused. I'm not exactly sure what a GLE 400 is. I know at one time (2015 or 2016?) there was a GLE 400 which had an 8-cylinder engine. Next, possibly in 2016, there was a GLE 400 with a 6-cylinder engine. Next, the GLE 400 was no longer available and became the GLE AMG 43 with a 6-cylinder bi-turbo engine at 365 or so HP, which in 2018 was also a 6-cylinger bi-turbo engine developing 385 HP. I'm assuming the same engine as previous, and different chip, or differently tuned chip. I actually just purchased this one (GLE AMG 43 SUV - not the coupe). So, can you someone please explain now what is a GLE 400?
As an interesting little tidbit, at about 450 miles, non-highway driving, I'm at 12 or so MPG. I'm assuming it will improve once i get over 1K miles. |
I didn't know any 400's to have a V8. They have always been V6s. My 2016 GLE400 has a twin turbo V6 3.0L. It was also very shortly lived on a few 2017 before it went to a GLE43 in which Mercedes kept the same engine but just tweaked it and turned the turbos up a little. There were no 2015 GLE's because it was the ML prior to 2016 when MB did the facelift and I don't know if the 400 was offered on the ML ever. This is all relevent to the USA and maybe a little diffrent in other countries.
On a side note, and to confuse you little more, there was a GLE450 coupe for 2016 and again very short 2017 before it went to the GLE43 coupe too. (please excuse any typos or information as I'm sitting in a hospital bed recovering from back surgery with great pain drip IV :p: ) |
What is a 2018 GLE 400?
Really sorry to hear about your back surgery. Hopefully these questions may take your mind off a bit. I will research more the 8 cylinder engine I mentioned. So then what exactly is a 2018 GLE 400 since I am unable to see it on MB website? |

If you go back to the beginning of the W166 in the 2012 model year, there was the ML350 V6 gas engine, ML350 Bluetec V6 diesel engine, the ML550 V8 gas engine, as well as the AMG ML63. For 2015, the ML550 V8 became the ML400 V6. With the facelift for the 2016 model year, the lower V6 gas continued on as the GLE350 and the higher V6 continued as the GLE400. Also, the V6 diesel was dropped and they introduced a 4 cylinder diesel GLE250 which is no longer available due to the VW mess. Then for 2017, the GLE400 was dropped and the GLE43 came about (329hp vs 362hp). This was all for the US market.
Also, to follow the chronology above, in 2018, the 362 HP engine became the current AMG 43 385 HP engine in the US market. |

I think what may be going on is that the GLE 400 is not a US model and it does have a Bi-turbo V6 engine, but I'm not sure which Bi-turbo V6 it is.

In Canada we have a 2018 GLE 400, V6, 4-Matic. This model is not available in the US. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mbw...4b526b9954.png |
The GLE 550 looks like an excellent choice. Is it a V8? Pic is a bit blurry. Couldn’t see if it was a V6 or V8. |
Yes. The GLE 550 is a V8. But now I’m excited about the new GLE53 that maybe coming!

Excuse me. "Fake AMG 43's"? "Bee-buzzing sound"? Actually mine seems to roar and nothing fake about it - seems to move. Possibly Canadian air changes the sound I guess. :)

I'm not 100% sure what the "53" engine is but I think it is a 3.0L twin turbo with some kind of electric motor too.

I was waiting for someone to take offense to that. A friend of mine also has a C43. It's the "AMG" GLE43 naming that creates the fake AMG image in people's minds. The real AMG GLE63, or any of the other "63" models have high performance hand built engines. The 43 engine is not. In the case of the C-class, what used to be the C450 was just rebadged as the C43, same exact engine. And that engine is now in many of the vehicles in Mercedes' lineup. Almost similar to BMW's M-performance vehicles (M550xi, M760li, X3M40i, etc) which have tuned engines, upgraded suspensions, performance exhaust, etc but are not full M cars (M3, M5, X5M, w/ what are essentially racing engines). BMW's naming leads to a bit more of a distinction and less mis-belief than Mercedes doess. An M550xi is not an M5 just as an AMG E43 is not an AMG E63. In fact, Audi has been on this trend for years with their S-line cars vs the RS vehicles.

I felt sorry for you tell you made a reference to “PATS.” Now I know you can’t help it. :rolf: (It’s your car. Drive whatever you want, however you want!)

Sorry, nothing "fake" about it in my mind. The car roars - not "buzzes", I enjoy driving it, the floor mats say "AMG", it has the AMG checkerboard on the gauges, the wheels say "AMG", it has the extra set of AMG temperature options to view, it says "AMG on the back, it has the adjustable suspension, and the engine is red. It will easily outpace your pithy 350 any day of the week or weekend. So, in my mind, it Is an AMG. And in spite of your totally offensive and lackluster comments - "GO PATS!" :)
But that aside, I'm cool w/ anyone that's a Pats fan! Funny story, last year we went down to the Bahamas for Super Bowl weekend. It didn't hit me that we were connecting through Philly. It was all Eagles fans on the 2nd flight. |
