GLE43 Coupe - Little Known and Hidden Features

Here are some features many of your may not be aware of. My apologies beforehand if these are common knowledge.

1. Ever wondered how to go directly to the 360 degree cameras without navigating through menus? The cameras automatically turn on in Reverse, but what about when you're going "forward". A simple "long" press of the "Vehicle" button on the upper center console is all it takes. This is handy for those times when you're pulling forward into a parking space or entering a tight garage doorway.

2. What do you do when you're unloading your car at the airport, you have your hands full and you need a place to temporarily hang your garment bag? Use the built-in coat hook on the edge of the rear tailgate.

3. Want to secure those annoying plastic grocery bags in the cargo area so the contents don't wind up rolling all over the place? Just use the bag hooks on either side of the cargo area. Push the indent and they swing open.

4. Hot summer days can be murder on the contents of your glove box. Open the glove box vent on the ceiling of the compartment and let the air conditioner cool the contents.

5. Just beneath the right rear passenger's seat you'll find a handy 115V power outlet similar to what you'd find at home. You can power a laptop, gaming console, battery charger, etc. Just make sure the power consumption of the device doesn't exceed 150 watts.

Since I'm not near my car to look or test it, does anyone know if #1 works while carplay is operating? Now I have to stop, put the car quickly into reverse and then back to drive. I've had a few people blow their horns at me in the parking lot because I looked like an idiot.
If you don't mind, I'll add something.
6. Don't be using siri, example speaking to siri to write out a text or starting to search for directions and put the car into reverse before you hit send or go. It will cancel everything out and you have to start over.

Thanks for the others!

I haven't tried it. I don't see why not. It's a completely separate function. A few more things to add. The car has to be in "D", "R" or "N" and you can't be going over 11 mph. You can actually drive forward with the camera constantly displayed, as long as you don't exceed that speed.

Yes! But somewhere between 2014 and 2016 MB decided to drop the MPH. It used to be closer to 20 and would stay on most of the time while driving in a parking lot because of this higher speed. Now the speed is just a little too low in my opinion.

Or we can add that the parking braked will automatically set and release itself.
And if the car is in D and you open the driver's door, the car will go into P and set the brake.
All good tips!

I just figured out that if you are at a red light just press the brake pedal hard and "HOLD" shows on dash and you can take foot off pedals and hands off wheel till u tap the gas again...

You can also set up your key fob to just open the drivers door on the first click and all the doors when you press twice. Stand 1 foot away from the drivers door and hold the lock and unlock button down at the same time for 10 seconds. To reverse it do the same. Much safer for the wives.

I found kind of a "cool" one today.. most people already know you can hold the FOB while unlocking and the windows will all roll down. In my GLE 43 Coupe with cooled seats it actually turns on the drivers seat cooler!

Yes, I believe it also turns on the heated seats as well, if you had them on when the car was turned off.

Shortcut Keys

My BMW had buttons that I could programmable to call my wife, the office, program the GPS To home, office, etc with one touch of the button.

Does MB have a way to program performing common functions with 1 touch ?

Yes. It's called the "Favorites" button. It's the one with the "star" on it.

I just discovered a few features purely by accident.

I'd always assumed you needed to turn on the vehicle power by pressing the Start/Stop button once in order to turn on COMAND. You don't. COMAND will turn on without first turning on the ignition. In fact, you don't even need the SmartKey in the car with you. My SmartKey was in a completely different part of the house and COMAND turned on as usual. This is so handy. Many times I've needed to turn on COMAND to check music I've just downloaded to the USB drive, but I didn't have the key with me. Now, I don't even need it.

When you press the "Mute" button on the steering wheel while playing media, it not only mutes the music, it pauses it too. So when you unmute the music, it picks up right where you left off. You don't miss any of the music. On most cars, when you press "Mute", it silences the audio, but the music still continues to play.

Now, if only MB would add a volume bar on the display, I'd be completely happy.

This drives me nuts!!

You know, at the end of the day, it's one of them things that probably doesn't matter a whole lot. If the musics too loud turn it down. If it's too soft, turn it up.

BUT, I just don't know where I am on the range!!! I WANT TO KNOW THAT!!! Why is this such a hard feature to add to the screen???

Exactly. It makes me wonder what on earth were the software engineers thinking. It's like they designed a system that they never bothered to test themselves. If you were to use it, you'd immediately notice the absence of this feature.

They can design a car that drives and parks itself, but they can't put a simple volume bar on the display?

You can't. Why would you need to do that? Why can't the passenger adjust their own seat?

My 3 teenagers tend to recline the seats when they ride with me. I am a nagging enough dad, so I try not to nag them any further when they jump out of the car as fast as they can to get away from me. Need to pick my battles with them.

I don't like to drive around with the seats back and it's unsightly for the next adult rider to see the seat so reclined when they get in.

My BMW and Audi did this from the driver's seat, Mercedes should have it too.

LOL. I'm laughing because I thought my son was the only one who did that. I also felt it was unsightly to drive around with no passenger in that seat and the seat reclined so far. I used to change it as soon as he got out. Must be a "teenager" thing. I had completely forgotten I used to have that problem too. He's 23 now, and out of the nest with his own car. Now, the driver's seat in his car is also reclined, although not nearly to the same extent. I guess the older you get, the less obtuse you prefer the seat angle.

Yes, it would be nice if MB had that feature as well. It might be a good idea to suggest it to them. That's how improvements are made, through consumer input. In the mean time, you can do like I do. I have the "third" memory button on the passenger side programmed to driver's seat symmetry. I just press that button after anyone who's adjusted the seat to a bizarre angle gets out.

I found another thing the other day. I keep my car locked in the garage and needed to get something out of it so I unlocked it and then put my shoes on and went to go out to the garage. About the time I opened the door and started into the garage the car locked itself and horn honked/lights blinked. I thought huh, thats odd. I did it again and sure enough, if you unlock the car and dont open a door within a certain time frame it re-locks it! It seems like about 60 seconds or between 60-120 seconds.

This may be a newer model thing though, as I'm not sure that my wifes GLE350 does this. Only my Coupe..

Her car should do it too. My 16 GLE 400 does it and my wife’s older E did it. Great find!

Absolutely! I actually checked the Coupe to see if it had this feature, as I had it on one of my previous vehicles and missed it. When I first discovered this, I timed it. It's exactly 40 seconds. Great safety feature. Say you go outside and unlock the car. Then, you remember you forgot something and go back inside, forgetting to re-lock the car. The car will lock itself.

i know this is old. My CL550 has this...my 2018 E400 has it too. Was disappointed it’s not in the GLE coupe, but I’m sure it will be in the 2020.
Thanks for all of the Easter Eggs guys!

Along these lines, I also discovered if you have the brake pedal locked via the "Hold" feature (engine running), after a few minutes the car will automatically engage the parking brake.

I discovered a new annoying trick (because I'm at 49,234 miles and about to be out of warranty so I panicked) yesterday while doing a lot of late night interstate driving in the rain. The automatic high and low headlights will not work when the fog lights are turned on. I assume this is probably the same for all MB's with the upgraded lights.
