Winter Tires

Any suggestions where I can buy black winter tires for my GLE63 AMG S? my tires are 22" so I'll need new rims. Do they have to be 21's or should I go with 20's?

I'm looking into this as well now, and I would actually like to find all season tires.

Unfortunately, there appears to really only be one company that makes the correct tire for the rear, and that's the stock Pirelli's that come on there.

Yokohama has these tires, which is about the only company I've seen that even has ANY tires available for the rear:

Parada Spec-X and they have the correct front size, but only have these three sizes for the rears:

305/40R22
305/42R22
325/50R22

Looking at a tire calculator, the only one that's even close is the 305/40. They are a little bit narrower, which shouldn't be an issue (other than looks), but they are 1.9% taller and bigger in circumfence. That means that they are making 13 less revs / mile.

At the end of the day, is there a "limit" on how far off tires can be before they start causing drive line issues???

If you are not sensitive to price, the OE 21' and 22' Pirelli scorpion winter is the way to go. There are some alternatives. For 21', you may try nokians hakka9 w/wo stud at a lower price. There are some 20' tire and wheel packages on tirerack.com however they are not factory specs. Hope this is a good starting point for your research.

I bought a set of 21' MO spec Pirelli scorpion winter in Costco, because it's the best price I can get in my area.

What do you think of 20” tires? Safer?

I don't know that I would call them safer, but there is definitely a LOT more options for winter and all-season in that size...

I would say 20' is as safe as 21'. However, because they are lighter, the car will ride softer and use less fuel. And 20' tires are cheaper.

Remember,as you up the wheel size & decrease the amount of tire rubber, you up the risk of damage when you hit a pothole.

Winter tire/rim options

Winter snow tires come in very limited sizes compared to performance tires. In winter, short width is better for traction in snow and on ice.
So changing out rims and tires is most effective. You do not state it, but I gather your rears and fronts are not the same width currently with summer/performance rubber.
Key to selecting alternative tires is first to decide on same or staggered width front to rear. For winter tires, I'd suggest go with same width to optimize investment of winter rims and tires.
When going to smaller diameter rims (21, 20, or 19) key is tire diameter to keep very close to rolling diameter. Try this site to find comparable sizes with change in rim diameter. https://tiresize.com/calculator/
Next decision are rim widths for the tires you select, again with winter tire, skinnier is better. So probably looking for 9"/9.5"/10" wide rims. Make sure tire choice will work with rim width and vis-a-versa.

Option Benz GLE SUV offers are (I suspect AMG rotors/calipers "could" require wheels not the same as stock W166):
Wheel size: 8.5Jx19 ET62 Tire size: 235/50R18 (not AMG)
Wheel size: 8Jx19 ET39 Tire size: 235/55R19 (not AMG)
Wheel size: 9Jx20 ET57 Tire size: 235/45R19 (not AMG)
Wheel size: 9Jx20 ET57 Tire size: 265/45R20
Wheel size: 10Jx21 ET46 Tire size: 295/35R21

Other AMG wheel/tire Specs can be found here: https://www.wheel-size.com/size/mercedes/gle-amg/2017/

I have been looking at wheels/rims and tires matching the 4th option for my AMG GLE 43.

Wheel/rim offset is also a critical choice in selecting a rim, as rim width decreases so does offset (ET) to keep rim "centered in the wheel well opening and proper alignment / tracking. Also to avoid clearance issues with brakes and body. And obvious, bolt patter 5x112.

A handy tool for compare rim/tire choices: https://tiresize.com/wheel-offset-calculator/
And some background: http://www.moderntiredealer.com/arti...o-wheel-offset

Also need TPMS installed in winter rims.
