Renntech EVM GLE53 Installation

Has anyone gotten an EVM for either their GLE53 or 63 AMG? I have the unit but cannot figure out what to do for the life of my life. I have the basics down, I know where the valves are and I see the wire that I need to change. However, there are no instructions for the GLE at all on the provided manual. I am stuck finding the Gromit to pass the wires through, and the fact that the wires for the valve's run above some underbody shielding.

I have/had an EVM module installed on my 2022 63s. It is still installed currently, but not connected to anything as I subsequently did a muffler delete. Overall, I wouldn't recommend the EVM for the price point, but you already have it...

The gromits to pass through are on the sides of the trunk and contain existing wires. I ended up having a local shop install this module for me since everything I saw for online instructions wanted a lift to get to inside the fenders to connect the actuators. Here are a couple pics from the installer, hopefully it helps.

Yes, I did the install in a 2023 GLE63s. I passed the wire through the grommet on the passenger side of the car. Took a bit of maneuvering to get the wire around the heat shied to the actuator. Was a bit of a pain and almost thought about just skipping the EVM install a few times during the process:-) Plugged the dropped wire/connector into the valve and you are good to go. I then ran the wire for the driver side across the underbelly of the car and fastened to existing cables/body parts to reach the drivers side actuator. Happy to provide further details if you want to PM me.

Hi guys, I'm getting mine next week with zero idea how to install. Would be great to have some pics point out where the cable to connect to. I just want to try by myself first. Thank you.

Just got mine as well. Gonna try this next week. What about the 3rd valve midway up the exhaust? I assume it doesn’t get messed with?

You are connecting and controlling the two rear most valves only (one on each side behind the rear wheel well)

So you guys see value when this upgrade is worth it even in sport plus mode with the AMG performance exhaust and flaps open stock vs evm.
I know it helps comfort and other modes but if you’re already on the most aggressive mode, does this make it even more aggressive in anyway?

In standard modes (comfort, etc.), yes. If you are driving in Sport, Sport+ or custom with the performance exhaust then I do not notice much if any difference. I dont think I would do it again on a vehicle with performance exhaust but thats just my option, obviously:-)

The module's main purpose to keep the valves open all time with a press of a button, even with PE performance exhaust, they close up once RPM is below a certain number. So for example the valves open fully at 6K and when it shifts it immediately closes so the low RPM growl you wouldn't be able to hear as much as if you have it fully opened. Here is how much valves open up on a PE vehicle without the module (different car though):

Thanks for the replies.

So I’m also guessing there is no other way to get the flaps open 100% of the time besides a module like this?

BMW you have a car in Sport+ and remove the flap fuse and they are stuck open all day for free and its a 10 second job thats also reversible in another 10 seconds too.

I agree. I have an EVM on my C63 and can tell a difference, although it's nothing to write home about. Therefore, I decided against one for my GLE. To me stock is good enough for what the vehicle is and its intended purpose. I love my GLE and find myself driving in comfort 95% of the time anyways.

Well, technically yes there is... https://burgertuning.com/collections...r-bypass-plugs

not sure if it is compatible with the GLE 53 though.

I have been following this thread, but I can't understand how this kit is any better than pushing the button that already exists.

On my 53, open is open and closed is closed with the onboard switches, so how is this different?

I'm asking the forum, adding to your questions.

I have my flaps open all the time using coding from Raj which makes "I" mode the default at startup. I have mine set with the comfort settings but exhaust flaps open so that's how my car defaults on startup.

thats correct. I guess other gle models don't have that option?
on the 2024 we can select open exhaust valve no matter what mode were in.
i really want to spend money on this. But all the youtube clips compare comfort to sport plus. I want to see sport plus with and without it.

It doesn't quite work like that. Open is open at idle in which you can hear the difference. Factory settings do not allow the exhaust flaps to be fully opened unless a certain speed/RPM is reached. At cruising speeds the flaps will never be fully opened. EVM assures it's opened 100% of the time unlike the factory sport exhaust button.

Maybe there's a difference in years.
I can certainly hear a difference at 1800 RPM around town.
I'll take a drive today and see if they seem fully open when I open them.

The other side of that, is that mashing the throttle at any RPM, at any setting, will open the flaps.

It does get louder above 3500 RPM, but I thought that was just where my six started to sing. Which it does.

Well, I went out, opened and closed flaps, revved up and down, generally behaving irresponsibly and listening to my exhaust.

I wanted to check out your statement "Factory settings do not allow the exhaust flaps to be fully opened unless a certain speed/RPM is reached." And to see if I could make them open and close at will.

My results (a '21): Mine open whenever I want, at whatever speed. On the gas, off the gas, light throttle, heavy throttle - I think I'm in control of the flaps. (I can't say definitively that it's true at 80 mph with the windows down, though.)

What I do think happens in your scenario, is that there are only two options: Powerful and Balanced. You can switch into Powerful and the flaps open according to that control.

But on Balanced, flaps will stay closed but switch to Powerful if you stand on it, or when "a certain speed/RPM is reached." I'll add "gas pedal velocity" to that equation.
They definitely open in Comfort, at 1800 RPM, 20 mph, if I mash the pedal. Or 3500, 50mph, Comfort mode, Balanced exhaust setting.

So I'm wondering further about the value of this exhaust kit.
It seems to me that it offers the same functionality as the Mercedes exhaust option, but without the "automatically open in balanced" feature.
And I can't see how it would even operate unless you had the optional Mercedes exhaust.

Again, asking the forum not you. Curious.

EDIT: I just went back and read the Renntech advert. I see that @benzbell just copied and pasted the text from their site.
I generally respect Renntech, but I really question their claim. Their videos are certainly don't support their narrative.

But before I'd spend $800, I'd want to place a GoPro to verify that my exhaust flaps close when I have them open. Or something.

They licensed the module and tech from ASR, they want to make as much money back as soon as possible.

Renntech wouldn't be in business if they were selling bogus modules nor would ASR. Buying from ASR is difficult because you have to set up an intermediary to ship it to you from Germany. Licensing agreement with Renntech is for ASR not to sell/ship to the US. I didn't want to deal with all that just to save a few bucks so I ordered mine from Renntech.

I agree that Renntech is a reputable firm, and I've done business with them in the past.

But from my report above, their description of the stock exhaust valves doesn't fit my experience.

So I am wondering if this is for the Great Britain market, where they have tighter restrictions on exhaust noise.

Or, what the heck does it do? What is improved in real life?

I have installed the module and removed by a shop.

here is my experience. Well, you will hear the difference in comfort mode at low speed (in comfort). To me, overall the sound gets lower tone which I don't like. The original sound of the 53 seems to be in high pitch. It's very pleasing for my ears. To turn the valve open all the time it was like trying to be v8 63. The tone is lower a bit. You wont get the v8 sound anyway. The pop and bang is also have lower tone. It was "Bang" with original and then "Bong" with the module.

In default mode, even though the device claims it is factory setting. The vehicle will take control like there is no EVM installed. To me, it also sounds difference. I love the engine rev in 3rd and 4th gear when turbo sound kick-in at high rpm. The long "Weeeeeeeeeeeed" sound. After I installed the EVM, the engine rev and turbo sound cause less noise. Too quiet compared to stock. I don't know why but it happened. I search over the internet if the 53 has artificial engine sound through speakers and if somehow the shop forgot to connect some cables so the sound is missing LOL.

So, I prefer the original exhaust sound of the 53. The higher pitch tone. The lovely "Bang" and "Weeeeeed"

ps. You wont get the pop and bang in other mode except sport+ even if the EVM open the valve all the time. The car wont bang in other modes.
