GLK350 Headlights

Hello all. I just bought a GLS350 and overall very much like the car. The only thing that really bothers me are the headlights. On low beam, there is a very low and abrupt cut-off of the beam. It's horrible and unacceptable in my opinion. Will be talking to the dealer about it soon as maybe they are not adjusted correctly (one can hope). Has anyone else noticed this?

Do you have Bi-Xenons? I know in my GL, Xenons cut off very abruptly but me (or other GL owners) just find the Xenons amazing, FWIW.

Sounds like you have a set of perfectly healthy bi-xenons. All bi-xenons are like this regardless of MB, BMW. Porsche etc. They have an upper shield that blocks the bulb from shining too high. You'll also notice the left bulb is shielded slightly more since oncoming traffic is on the left. I'm sure this is config is reversed for countries that have right hand drive cars.

If I remember correctly, your beams should be about 2 feet off the ground at 25 foot distance. Also, I don't think the guys at MB will be able to raise it passed the guideline height just because you want it higher. They could be liable for the people you blind! :D

While the HID headlights do have 'abrupt' cut-offs, on my GLK the pattern is excellent on low beam and great on high beam. No complaints at all.

what are the bulbs in the HIDs?

Bitmover 03-02-2009 01:30 PM

Halogens

They are the halogen lights. It's not bad in city driving or close freeway because of all the other ambient light, and if the road is flat. Maybe I'll just have to learn to live with it.

What i meant was what type /model ? H4 ? etc.

I'm not sure. Whatever comes with the base package. I couldn't find a reference to anything specific on the sticker or in the manual about the type of lights.

Are BiXenon Headlights the same as HID?

+1 yes They are.. Different vendor use different technology, but to answer your question they are HID.

Bi-Xenon means that both the low & high beam are HID. The basic xenon is just HID for the low beam.

Anyone knows if the front fog lights are Xenon too? It will be nice to have all front lights in same color temp.

I doubt that. I think it's rare for fogs to be xenons. They serve different purpose, where brightness is not necessary.

Also bixenons on GLK are white (not blue :nix:) so they match already.

if u didnt order bi-xeons do u still get hid? or are the yellow?

NYCGLK 03-04-2009 04:30 PM

No, you get halogens (bixenons=HID). I would not call them yellow, but they are just regular headlights. Most of the reviews are based on GLK with no lighting package, that should give you an idea what they look like.

You can always replace those with whatever kelvin temperature (color) you'd like for 30-50 bux.

From my knowledge the main difference between HID's and halogens are the lenses. You can put HID's on any car, but HIDs are much brigher and need lens to focus the light. If you have seen those ghetto cars with really bright lights, this is result of putting HID bulb into regular headlight. This is also why retroffiting HID's properly is tought and expensive because you pretty much have to replace the headlight.
