Winter Tires Question

Hello, I am in the Edmonton area and looking to get a) winter tires and a set of black rims and b) 3M protection on the front hood and bumper.

For tires and rims, is tire rack my best option? I read they deliver to your door, but don't I need to go to a garage and get them mounted and balanced? Also, I plan on putting my stock rims onto the winter tires and using my new black rims on the stock tires for the summer. How do I figure out which tires and rims will fit the stock stuff? Can I just call tire rack and ask?

For 3M, can anyone in the Edmonton area recommend a place? I'm considering garage works (little expensive), or ming's shine.

Thanks.

EDIT: Does anyone have recommendations on black rims?

Might not be good idea to use stock rims for winter as they are prolly 19 if not 20 inch rims. Winter tires are better in 17-18.

I would get set of 17inch rims with winter tires, that will cost you the same as getting winter tires for 19 or 20 inch rims. Also there is only one brand that makes winter tires for 20 inch rim and it's not cheap. If you really want black rims you can always paint the stock one and use them for the summer. Some members did this here and it looked pretty good.

Lastly, search... tons of discussions on winter tires/rims/where to buy/better sizes etc.

also FYI: you usually put tires on rims not rims on tires.

And yes if you buy rims and tires from tire rack you can ask them to mount them for no extra charge (at least in US).

I got my winter rims and tires from tire rack, and it was $1450 CDN for everything, and they were mounted balanced and ready to put on when it snows! The rims looks very nice, they are black and polished aluminum. Just go with that route, and get them from Tire Rack! It was less than half the price of getting them in Canada.

As for your 3M question, I can recommend Fire Storm (West End) or European Auto Tinting (South Side). Fire Storm did my GLK last December and aside from on small bubble on one of the headlights, I haven't had any issues. European did my 135i in 2008 and they did a great job as well. Pricing will depend on you, because you pay per piece of coverage. I suggest full front including A-pillars, 1/3 hood and front fenders, lower doors and rocker panels and the upper part of the rear bumper. This last one is important in the winter because your legs rub against it every time you reach into the hatch and it's usually dusty or dirty which will cause scratches.

I picked up tires and have a quick question.

I have the Pirelli 235 45r 20 on. I got snow tires that are 235 65R 17.

However the diameter of the snow tires from the outside of the tire is 29" whereas the Pirelli's is 28". Is that ok?

Other then your speedometer being a little off your fine. The attched tire size calculator should help give you more info.

I am also from Edmonton.
I went with Garage works , and I got to recommend them. I don't know if this is the case for other 3M installers, but if there are buddles underneath the 3M, they will replace that 3M piece for free. I've had experience because when I went to Husky to get a full wandless carwash ( I was feeling lazy :P ) , the pressure of the hose made a lot of bubbles undernearth the 3M. I went to Garage Works and they said I can have it replaced for free.
Also , the person that does 3M there has a GLK, which is a bonus :P.

As for black rims, I am actually considering getting Vossen VVS-082 ( http://wheelsperformancecom.stores.y...vossen082.html ), but I can't find a authorized reseller in Edmonton.

After almost a full minute of staring, I finally figured out what this means.

I think the word you were searching for is "bubbles".

3M Clear bra products suck in colder, rock and salt infested parts of the world. Sure they're designed to help chips and dings in these parts, but when they age, become brittle, chip and peel on their own... man did it make me regret I ever had it done.

I also bought it from Tire Rack.

I paid approx. $1,500 USD. This includes shipping, duties, broker fee, and taxes.
I got them within five days. Including the conversion, its still cheaper by $300.00 The real saving is in the wheels.

This is what I got.
17x7.5 Elbrus I05 Silver Machined w/ice coating wheels
235/60R17 Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 tires.

I just got them mounted at Big-O Tires (for $34.00) and here is what they looks like.

They look good. I like the larger sidewall on SUV's, you won't get stuck now.

Hi I also live in the lower mainland and need to find tires and wheels today. I currently have the 20" sports package. Your deal looks great. So you did not need sensors? I read that the Canadian GLKs do not need sensors. Also I assume that the 35mm offset was enough. Some earlier posts in this forum advocated 45mm offset on the wheels.

No, we don't need sensors and the 35mm offset was enough.

To offer my input, same as above poster I paid about the same from Tire Rack. Not sure which style wheel I choose, had the tpm's installed and tires mounted by Tire Rack. Great business to deal with, tires/wheels arrived within two days.

Included some miscellaneous pictures because I was bored. Probably preaching to the choir but these are great vehicles, you can clean them up to take to black tie, or like me use them for technical off roading too. I used to use a Jeep Wrangler for those outings but find the GLK to be just as competent and in some areas better because the lack of low differentials. I can clear logging trail ruts much better and drive over fallen trees at bad angles. Can not say enough good things about this vehicle.

Hi,
I went ahead and ordered from Tire Rack. I actually ordered the exact same combo as dagwoodnil. Ordered on Thursday, they called on Tuesday, but I was unable to be available for delivery till Wednesday morning. Tires on rims and balanced, Mercedes center caps on, all I had to do was pop 'em on. Really great service, no hassles whatsoever. Thanks for the idea and helpful advice.

Exactly the same set as I am running. They look great!
Also, the ride is much smoother than the 20's.

I went ahead and ordered the following:

17x7.5 Elbrus I05 Silver Machined w/ice coating wheels
235/60R17 Bridgestone Blizzak WS70 tires.

I also ordered the Mercedes center caps. Did the order on the Thursday and they called me on Tuesday late afternoon to deliver at my office. Fortunately here in Canada we do not need the tire pressure sensors. I had them mount and balance the tires on the wheels and a friend and I simply popped them on.
Great service, great products and they look really nice. Thanks to dagwoodnil for the information.
