Help! Sunroof won't close.
My wife just called me from work and says her sunroof will not close. When she pushes the button it inches forward but then goes back. I told her to check the tracks to see if anything is in the way but she says she can't see anything.
Where do I start?:nix: 2010 GLK 350 4Matic with 22,000 miles. |
Dealer. Before it rains. Good luck.

That's what I was afraid of

I had a similar event with my old Volvo. Driving to work. Started to sprinkle. Put the driver's window up. It went up about two inches and stopped. I drove straight to the dealer. Beat the rain.
Your sunroof does sound like something may be in the way, binding or lack of lubrication. Wayne |
Just looked at it, certainly appears lubed, can't see anything in the way.. She's about to take it to the dealer which is 1.5 hours away :(
At least it's a certified pre-owned. |
With lots of original warranty left. Sorry about the distance. We are almost in that same situation.

Here is a the direct text from the Owner's Manual. I hope this helps! Problem: the sunroof cannot be closed and you cannot see the cause. Warning! You could be severely or even fatally injured when closing the sliding sunroof with increased closing force or if the antientrapment feature is deactivated. Make sure that nobody can become trapped when closing the sliding sunroof. If the sliding sunroof is obstructed during closing: Immediately after the sliding sunroof blocks, pull the switch in the overhead control panel down to the point of resistance and hold it until the sliding sunroof is closed. The sliding sunroof is closed with increased force. If the sliding sunroof is obstructed during closing again: Immediately after the sliding sunroof blocks, pull the switch in the overhead control panel down to the point of resistance and hold it until the sliding sunroof is closed. The sliding sunroof is closed without the anti-entrapment feature. Warning! Pressing and holding the sliding sunroof switch to close the sliding sunroof immediately after it had been blocked two times will cause the sliding sunroof to close without the anti-entrapment feature for as long as you hold the switch. |
Thanks for that, but we tried holding the switch down for a long time. She just went to the dealer and they had to do a 'reset and resynchronize', whatever the hell that means. It works now. :nix:

This video explains the synchronization. Haven't looked but it too should be in manual.
The instructions posted earlier appear to be for how to close a sticky sunroof. Seems they have a safety built in in case you get your head or arms or something in the opening while it is closing. Sticky rails would trigger same safety. By the way, after two Benzes with sunroofs, I specially ordered our 2014 GLK250 without a sunroof! Slow learner, I am afraid. |
Basically you just move the window an inch or 2 at a time until it fully closes. If you keep holding the switch, it will reverse itself when it hits it's electronic limit. What the resynch is is resetting where that electronic limit is set.
Once it is closed, you then hold the switch for 5 seconds. That sets the electronic limit at that spot. Then you move it to the full open position and hold for 5 seconds...resynch complete. The same thing works for the limits of how far your windows open and close and also your seat limits. |
