Thanks for sponsoring the MB site but this particular part of the forum is dedicated to the GLK and I'm not sure about how many people want to put a tune on an SUV?

One of the reasons, besides more room, for getting the GLK over the C300 was the extra horsepower from the same engine. I was sort of pissed that the 300 engine was only tuned for 248 horses as the C350 got the full 302hp from the same block but only rwd. Does it make sense to tune the 300 to full 302hp or does the 4matic tranny inhibit it?
I already ordered a GLK..... |

Does it make sense to tune a C300 248hp engine to 302hp (aside from warranty) or does it put undue strain on the transfer case of a 4matic?

No

Two things first this thread is about tuning. I have 268 HP from my 2010 350 and I'm happy with the response. It does not come close to my Corvette but it's an SUV. The second is if you put a tune on an in warranty car and you have a problem that requires MB you will have your warranty voided (on the drive train) upon their review.

If it is so simple why doesn't MB supply their cars tuned this way..?

The ECU Tune is a simple and reliable upgrade to your daily driver. You can gain that little bit extra power and responsiveness without have to worry about physically changing anything on the car :)
We are able to fully utilize the ability to tune the ECU to its potential. With the tune on the 350 we can gain 21hp and 19tq with the tune along with better throttle response and top speed limiter removal. The tune is not able to be seen by the dealer in the way that we flash the ECU. You can take the car into the dealer without ever having to worry about warranty items being reviewed because of it. That said, do not go telling them that you modified the car :D Geesh - I have a ECU flash on my BMW & have never once had the dealer question it when he hooks up his diagnostics to my port. It adds a few horse & TQ & the responsiveness is waaay better than what the factory provides upon delivery. I wish your flash can keep the "S" mode on permanently. I'd pay for that! |
I have nothing against a tune but part of the reason manufacturers don't maximize the shift patterns, torque response and other performance enhancements is very simple it's called CAFE. Their fleets need to meet certain MPG criteria. If they all tuned for the max we would be paying guzzler tax on so many more vehicles. Not saying that a GLK would ever be in that category.
On the other hand I find it hard to believe that GM on a Corvette can see a tune but MB can't detect one??:nix: |
Do you have any partner in Toronto (GTA) area?
I have a 2010 GLK350, how much power do I gain if I do this ? |

Because it's not in their best interest to bump you up to near pseudo AMG levels when they can get you for more on an AMG.

The GLK has 302 HP now, mine has 268 and for what its worth it's OK. A tume on a GLK might pick up 10 - 15 HP if you're lucky and that probably won't be at the wheels depending if you have 4Matic. |

Read your comment again - it was in response to that not the GLK specifically:
OK, so if AMG is appearance only on a GLK but all this extra performance is available by simply reflashing a PROM why doesn't MB offer it one way or another..? |
Because to be a true AMG usually the engine is heavily modified or totally different & suspension & driveability are also modified from the stock automobile.
Merc has no intention currently of making the GLK an AMG other than appearance wise. Thus my comment about their intention to squeeze more margins out of other cars in their line-up with true AMG tuning rather than allow pseudo AMG tweaks. |
OK, forget AMG.
My point is, if the new tuning is so foolproof why doesn't MB simply sell their cars tuned this way? All manufacturers play the statistics game (most headroom, best gas mileage, most horsepower...) so I would think a few extra ponies would appeal to them, especially if it was just a software tweak. BTW, I am playing devil's advocate here. I am a long-term motor head and I strongly suspect there are other issues involved, like perhaps drivablity, that compels MB to tune their cars as they do... |
Did you read my comment above.
First a GLK has always had a 3.5 L that started at 268 HP now the same engine has direct injection and other enhancements that bring it up to 302 HP. When AMG gets their hands into a vehicle the first thing they do is replace the engine with a larger more performance enhanced engine hence the C300 becomes the C63AMG. Why do you think they call it a C63 is a 6.3 L engine that puts out 451 HP. MB is not going to make a GLK in an AMG version just give you the look that's about it. BTW when anyone connects to the diagnostic port of a car they won't see a tune unless they are looking for it. If your engine or trans blew up while under warranty they are going to look and they will find the tune. |

I am trying to learn the "but..." of the lofty claims. |
Does the $249 include a hand held tuner that the owner keeps? That price seems awful low.

Really, I don't think so. You should ask how many GLK's they have done and go to their web site. You will probably get a quicker response there. |
