Ordering new 2014 GLK 250 Bluetec
I've decided I'm going to order a 2014 GLK 250 Bluetec for September delivery, and I'm in the process of deciding on the specifics.
In order for this car to fit into my budget, I have to get a pretty basic vehicle. So far I've decided on the following color combo:
Black/Black MB Tex/Black Ash Wood
Adding any of the big option packages is going to put me well over budget, so I'm pretty much sticking to the base vehicle. I do however want a Navigation, so I'm going to add the Becker Map Pilot rather than the Multimedia Package which costs 4x as much.
So I have a few questions:
1) What exactly is the "Media Interface" option?
Listed among the standard features of the vehicle is: "Both an auxiliary audio input jack and USB connector allow plug-and-play enjoyment from your iPod® or other MP3 player."
Media Interface says: "The Media Interface turns your Mercedes-Benz into an extension of your iPod or compatible electronic device. Browse, select and play your musical accompaniment of choice using the standard audio controls on the steering wheel or console."
So if I'm understanding the correctly, if I don't get this option then I can still connect my iPod and play music through the stereo, but if I want to be able to browse the music and choose my song from the Mercedes stereo or steering wheel controls, then I must get the Media Interface? Or else I would have to control the music from the iPod? Am I understanding this correctly?
2) Does anyone have the Becker Map Pilot Navigation? If so, can you comment on if it is decent?
3) Are there any other options that are "must have"? I know most people would say a sunroof, but in my last car I had one and opened it maybe twice in 3 years.
4) The salesperson indicated they can do 5% off MSRP. He also said there was 7% profit total in the car. If his numbers are correct, it seems like his offer is a good one. I would expect them to make at least 2% on a 40k car. Am I missing something or did he give a very good offer?
Some have said the Becker Map Pilot is decent, But I like the bigger screen with the Command system
Must have is the Lighting Package. Once you see it, you'll want it.
Ask what the Invoice price is. Each dealer will have a different invoice price. The dealer pays less than the invoice price and depending on what incentives are out there, they can sometimes sell below invoice (I got mine $1700 below invoice).
Check a few dealers and check edmunds.com for what incentives are out there.
Hard to find simple package 1 and that is it. Would not mind nicer sound system, but don't know if it is worth it. I really want the pano roof, but not much else in the package 1, don't care about the mirror, as I have a carport.
I was wondering how the iphone/ipod would work without the media package. Hard to tell exactly what the media package gives you.

I have Nav in a 2012 E350 and actually like the Becker system better. I have had Nav units in several different cars since they started appearing and have bought a couple of after market portable units. The Becker compares favorably in intuitive operation and detail shown with the other units I have used.
It is easily updated by plugging it into a computer and can be moved to another Mercedes if it is equipped with the pre-wiring. I am nowhere near being a tech expert but would buy it again. I think it is a little pricey when compared to after market units but does offer the integration which was important to me.
On ordering the Mdeia Interface - you will need to buy the Media adapter cable separately from MB like $65 MSRP. It is not included with the "kit".
If you get MapPilot pre-wiring you can choose to add the $600 Beck MapPilot later - if you choose not to order pre-wiring you can stick to a nav app on your phone.
Frankly - Premium 1 pack does make sense for most - you might choose to revisit that issue.
Keep the beat !
The new Becker Map Pilot on eBay is around $200, no need to pay $600...

I live just down the street (okay about 10 miles) from the factory if anyone needs some help just send me a message and I'll help out as much as I can.
Thanks for the tip about the iPhone 5 connection; we have 2, so I'll be sure to bring an adapter.
Thanks also for the offer to help. Our ETA Stuttgart is Sept 24, and the factory the next day. The dealer has been most helpful. We've been told to go to Harm to get instructions re that $35 card/certificate.
I dunno that we'll need help, but one never knows.
