Mobil 1 M 5W40 MB229.51 no longer available
I saw this post over at Peachparts.

I visited my local MB dealership a few weeks back to pickup Mobile 5W-40 for my DIY oil change and they advised me it had been replaced with 0W-30. The parts tech mentioned they now use the 0W-30 in all their diesel vehicles.
The oil is labelled "Mercedes-Benz PKW-Synthetic MB 229.52." |

I just had the 10,000 miles service done a few weeks ago on the 14 MB GLK 250 BT and the MB dealer paper work stated 5w40 M1 M formula use, aka MB 229.51. The new 0w30 falls under the MB 229.52. I had bought 24 bottles/4 6 packs of the 5w40 M1 M formula and will use them up before getting the new specification oil. I anticipate better mpg. The lower viscosity I project should yield 1 to 3 mpg BETTER. It is unknown i the wear numbers are same,better or worse than the 5w40 brew.

What is the reason that they do not spec 5 w 30 Mobil 1
It is used in a 638 hp ZR1, but not a GLK. You can not buy 5 w 40 anywhere , and maybe not 0 W 30. Is it what they call the " BENZ " tax ??? |

P.S. I checked for 2014 4Matic & Base, 0W40 is also approved. Per the owner's manual, have a few to choose from based on temps with 0W40 as one of them as well. |

Mobil 1 0W-40 motor oil has the following builders approval: MB-Approval 229.3 MB-Approval 229.5 Those approvals are not good for diesels, but are apparently good for gassers requiring those specs. Confirmed here. |
Oil film strength in a slider pad class bearing, of which crank and connecting rod bearings belong, is dependent on the relative speed of the upper and lower pads along with the area of the bearing surface, in this case the block and crank or the crank and the connecting rod. ( see Design of Film Bearing, Robert Trumpler, 1966) The film strength needed in a diesel due to its high compression ratio and lower speed is considerably greater than that needed in a gasoline engine with about 1/2 the compression ratio and higher rotational speeds. The resultants of combustion and accompanying 'blow by' require different additives for acid dispersion and other degradation effects. So oil specified for gasoline engines is usually not suitable for diesels.
