2014 GLK350 pros and cons ?
 

Hi all,
Amongst other vehicles I'm considering a 2014 low mileage certified GLK350 as a daily driver for my wife.
She is on her 2nd Subaru and bit like previous one is pushing 200,000 miles. They have been great cars.

Over the long haul what sort of maintenances issues will a GLK350 have?

Will it last without many problems to the 200,000 mile mark?

We live way off the hard road and get significant snow and have a steep gravel driveway.
Does 4matic work as well as the Subie AWD?

She drives 60-80 miles each day and I want something that is worry free, safe and capable.

This version of the GLK has been out for a couple of years. People can give you answers based on guesses, hope, optimism, wishful thinking etc. Is this really going to sway you one way or another or give you comfort?

These are "crystal ball" questions and your guesses are probably as good as the next person's.

The accurate answers are: Time will tell what type maintenance issues it has, if any, and it may or may not last 200,000 miles without "many" problems.


A Pro: seems to be rated highly for safety

A Con: fuel mileage is so-so

It's the best mileage vehicle we have now after we traded the escalade with 194934 miles.

Sorry, I simply do not understand what you wrote. Can you explain it in a different way?

Having been around since 2008 I would think there are enough high mileage GLKs to provide reliability and maintenance stats.

You're considering a 2014 and there were some changes after 2012 to the most core components of a vehicle - engine and transmission.

The GLK 350 gets me the most miles per gallon of all my other SUV's

So far it has 6,000 city miles on it. I have other SUV's for long travel.

53k miles on 2010 here with no trouble. The question with modern cars is not so much about number of miles but age itself. I think modern cars can easily handle 200k miles in 5-10 years. Beyond that it's hard to tell how well all those plastic and gasket pieces will last. If they start disintegrating, it will be cheaper to get new car than keep fixing it.


Another question is how well all these emissions systems will last. In most states a CEL won't let you pass emissions requiring expensive repair.

I love my GLK and of the hundreds of cars I have owned, feel it is one of the best made I have experienced. On the other hand, I would question driving it high mileage daily and doing that for 200,000 miles. I have little question it would easily accomplish that mission but would be concerned about the cost.


Parts and service are expensive when compared with something like a Subaru and generally there are more features that are subject to failure. The better question might be if you are willing to pay the tariff for the pleasure of the drive or are you simply looking for the least expensive vehicle for the mission.
