GLK350 2010 Fog to DRL LED conversion question

Hi to all,

I am considering replacing my fog lights on my 2010 GLK to LED DRLs.

However, I don't want to manually turn on the rotary switch to activate the new LED strips.

Is there a way either by using Xentry or a modified circuit to activate them to act as real DRL ?

Thanks !

On the '10 GLK the low beams in the US are the DTR lights. This option is only in the US can be turned on or off through the instrument cluster. Because the DTR light and low beams are the same there is no way to reroute that signal to another device. Suffice it to say your best option is just to change your fogs and put them on when you want. Keep in mind that you must use the same load (resistance) so the computer does not think you have a burnt out bulb.

Anyone did it with success ?

Just curious do you have Halogen or Bi-Xenon head lamps?

I don't agree with MKenM, here in Norway I have seen few mb c and b class (also few vw and audi vehicles), which had drl in ordinary fog lights, so I am pretty sure it is possible to recode it with right mb tool. I want the same thing but I haven't had time to visit mb dealer. But in some european countries and probably also in the US it is not allowed to use ordinary fog lights as daytime running lights, so dealer won't do it.

I am not saying that you can't have DRL's where the fogs are. I'm just saying that the low beams are the DRL's in a '10 GLK not a "B", "C", Audi or a VW. When the low beams are on and you flash the high beams normally the DRL's or fogs will turn off (that's the law in the US). You don't want to turn off your low beams when the high beams are flashed.

In my 2009 european version GLK with ILS, there is also option in instrument cluster to switch on/off DRL...there is also option to turn on fog lights without low beams/DRL...in my previous reply I tried to say that if c-class 2009 can have fog lights as DRL than GLK 2009 can also...all is about coding driving Unit/SAM module...if johny-rocks wants to change fog lights for led strips and have it like DRL, it is possible but coding with mb tool is needed...mb technician recodes DRL from low beams to fog lights and after this you won't have to turn on switch...but I don't understand why somebody wants this change if he has halogens? It is probably only visual thing, but pretty expensive...

You are right, I t is only for the looks as the newer GLK'S have LED strips instead of fogs.

But since anyway it will be aftermarket LED DRLs I will not be able to code them even if I have the Xentry tool.

Thanks for your answer !

Why don't you let mb to code DRL for ordinary fog lights and then connect led strips to fogs wiring? You will need extra resistors, which are obviously included with aftermarket led strips...

The GLK was introduced in the US in Jan of '09 as a 2010. My GLK was made in Oct of '08 in Germany as a US car not a European version. I'm sure you know there are differences between the two versions.

In the instrument cluster you can turn the DRL's on or off. My point is the DRL's are the low beam headlights not the fogs or any other light. My choice was not to have my low beams on all the time.

You can also switch the fog lights to come on whenever you start the car but they are not DRL's. And, the current fogs do nothing for the night time driving experience

Why not just put some good high output aftermarket driving lights on the car. That way you can direct them down the road where they should be aimed. Put a relay under the hood and a switch in the dash either below it or in one of the empty spots. That is unless you just like the looks of a strip of un-aimed LED's.
