Had my front brakes pad/rotors replaced about 14 months ago. 2013 GLK350 4matic.

Akebono Eur1406 pads.

About 3 months ago, noticed the car was rattling while going over bumps, potholes, etc. Only in the front. Determined it was the brake pads, because with my foot on the brake slightly, it wouldn't rattle.

Brought it back to the place that did the brakes. They showed me that the inner pad was loose. Outer pad wasn't. They are replacing the brake pads under warranty, but wondering what is supposed to keep the inner pad from rattling?

It doesn't look like the piston is pushing against it with the brake peddle off.

I've seen some youtube videos showing some MB vehicles with a clip that attaches to the piston, but it doesn't look like the Akebonos or OEM MB brake pads for the GLK350 clip into the piston.

So is there something that is supposed to keep these from rattling around or being loose on the rails. The spring clips are installed. It looks like they just attach on the edges of the brake pads into the rails.

Anyone done a brake job on these cars and know how its supposed to work? Just want to make sure this place installs them correctly.

Ok..well...looks like I'm getting them replaced with Centric 105.xxxxx, ceramic pads. Cheaper than Akebonos, but the tech I'm working with claims the hardware is better. We'll see. If these don't work, guess I'm going back to OEM.

Do the Akebonos come with two-piece « clips » that set the pads in the caliper? The stock clips are one piece and go from one side of the caliper to the other. I changed pads a hear or so ago and replaced the stock hardware with the one provided with the pads, but kept the stock one. Well, one of these clips fell off and the pads started rattling. I simply reinstalled the stock one.

I had a similar experience with akebonos on my glk. They however were about 3-4 years old before they began to rattle. I noticed the shims don’t cover the entire rear of the pad surface area and this may lead to imbalanced pressure from the brake pistons. Replaced with power stops.

The inner pads should come with the clips that keep them in place, so they shouldn't be loose.

If the clips break off or come unstuck, I'd replace the pads and see if you can warranty them as that would be a manufacturing defect in my opinion.

Should have clarified - I was referring to my front pads that don’t have hooks on the inner pads. I’m not sure if it was the hardware or pads that failed. I wish we could just buy the Mercedes brake hardware standalone.

What do you mean by rattling. sometimes i hear a noise going over bumps but i also hear a click when i hit the brake. This is the most modern Benz I have ever owned (well the wife's i drive an e55 and a 190e)

The rattling is what you described. A metallic rattle when going over small bumps at low speeds. This is the pad moving around the caliper carrier. Similarly, when you hit the brakes after not braking for a while, the pad "re-aligns", and you hear that clicking noise. Same as you're experiencing. By the way, my brake hardware was still present when replacing the pads, so the noise wasn't caused by one falling out or anything. Not saying akebonos are bad, just bad for the GLK. You should replace your pads.

Well i guess i will get some new pads, just looked and i have the Mercedes Brake Kit - Akebono 516347 pads. still seems odd that the inner pad does not stay touching the rotor all the time. I dont think i have ever meet a caliper that did not keep constant tension on the pads.

You can see in the image here that the shim does not continue to the edge of the pad. Our cars use a two piston caliper, and the outer edges of the piston goes over the edge of the shim. This is my theory at least as to why they make noise.
Last thing to note - the akebono pads I removed had like 90% life left in them, so can't blame them for being too worn.

Is there any reason not to use disc brake quiet on the backs of pads even though it is designed for non-shimmed pads?

While it is common for the pads to touch the disk, there should be no "tension". When you apply the brakes the rubber seals on the pistons deform outward toward the pads. When you release the pressure the elasticity of the seal actually pulls the piston back a few thousandths of an inch, completely releasing the tension.

Just FYI FCPEuro ( where i buy everything) aggreged to let me warranty the akebono pads for a different brand. They are the best parts sellers online hands down.

Of course I contacted them. Did I write that they are not a good company? You wrote that they are the best and I disagree. Anybody can reply to anything posted here. Comments/replies/feedback do not have to be solicited. You find my comment "hostile"? That seems an exaggeration.
