Squeaking noise after replacing Thermostat
Hi All,
I need some help here!! So I just got my 2011 GLK 350 service of 130K. When I brought it in there was a engine light on, the mechanic diagnosed it & mentioned that the thermostat needed to be replaced. When I got the car back there is a noise every time I start the car kinda embarrassing driving it around. I brought it back to the mechanic now hes saying I need to replace the belt I was furious since he didn't catch. Need some help if this is normal that when the thermostat is replaced that maybe from what my other friends say that possibly when installing the thermostat they may have spilled coolant to the belt which resulted to the noisy belt? Suggestions please I just dropped $800 just for the service + replacement for the thermostat. Plus they did a ****ty job on my intake they duct taped it instead of informing me it needs to be replaced & the mechanic got a ticket for not wearing a seat belt. What a day!!
Thanks,
Paula

I'll start be saying I'm not completely familiar with the 350 as I have a 250. However generally speaking on most all cars the thermostat housing is near the serpentine belt and it would be very easy to spill coolant on the belt. Coolant is greasy to the touch and shouldn't be allowed to get on the belt. I would think most competent mechanics would remove the belt to install the thermostat or at least protect the belt from spillage. My opinion is the belt should be replaced at this point but possibly from another technician if available. Best of luck to you.

Agree with srb1194: you should find a better mechanic.

i cant believe the mechanic didnt replace the belt while it was off, esp after spilling coolant on everything. The belt takes 5 minutes, including the time to pull it into the garage and open the hood. Belt is prob $30. I got it from FCP Euro, i replaced all the idler pulleys when i did the thermostat. The idler pulleys will also squeak if they are starting to go bad or have been drenched in coolant, there are two of them.
