Need advice: Which GLK to buy?
Hello community! I am planning to buy GLK and need some advice. 1. Which model year is the most reliable? 2. What would be more preferable: 2010-11 with low mileage, less than 20K miles? Or 2012-15 with more miles, less than 50K miles? 3. What should I consider buying GLK? I have experience with 07 E and SL class and know about possible issues. But I don't know much about GLK. Later years are DFI...I'm not sure if they are worse or not, but DFI technology is...new. Carbon build up on intake valves, different high pressure fuel injection, apparetnly harder spark plug change. Pre-DFI, its the same engine as in 07 minus the sprocket issues or whatever they had. DFI might be perfectly fine...it's actually a good engine on Porsches, but time will tell.
2WD avoids risk of transfer case failing and makes engine mount replacement much easier. I think with higher miles risk of failing transfer case is reduced, many failures happen early on. But just less complexity to deal with. The AWD system is very good in snow even with all-seasons. |

Dfi gives about 10% better mileage and doesn’t seem to have issues like other makes, 4wd is one of the best and needed if you live with snow. Pre 13 the interior dash looks not as good. |
Mercedes DFI does not seem to have carbon build-up problems that was seen in the early BMW DFI engines. I think you will be fine with the 2013+ engine and I for one like the 300HP and the ability to get 31mpg when I keep my foot out of it.
I agree that the 4-matic adds a lot of extra complexity and expensive parts that can break. Not sure about the 2013+ but the earlier years seems to have a lot of problems. Stick with 2WD and you won't have to worry about it. |
I just purchased a loaded CPO 2015 GLK 350 4Matic w/ 49k miles for $28,500. Dealer threw in an extra year of warranty along with a 50k service. Which, apparently, included new spark plugs and an oil change :y The front brakes were pulsating slightly at high speed so they replaced the rotors and pads as well. I added another 2 years to the warranty, for peace of mind (now warrantied until March of 2022) because of what I read in this forum, re: Transfer case, motor mounts, etc. I would suggest that if you're getting it from a dealer to do something similar, to avoid any unexpected, huge out-of-pocket costs. Beyond that, I'm extremely happy with the motor and smooth, quite ride. No complaints so far! Was hoping for better gas mileage for local/city driving (currently seeing ~18-20mpg) but I'm also having fun driving it. :zoom:

My wife's 2013 GLK 350 4-matic has 90k miles and drives like a new car. The transmission shop that changed our fluid and filter said the later transmissions are bullet proof meaning 2013 or newer
