2015 GLK 250 - Automatic Transmission Service? When and how much should it cost?

Have a 2015 GLK250 @ 130,000KM (or 80800 Miles), I'm checking through the Operator's Manual and I don't see a service interval for transmission service. Was able to download the 2015 Service Booklet online (which I don't seem to have in my glove compartment) and its saying "Automatic transmission - oil and filter change (Engine 157)" to be Serviced at every 120,000km or 4 years. So it looks like I'm overdue for a transmission service on this vehicle. Have some questions, hoping some fellow GLKers can help me out.

Is this a service that I should get at the Dealer? Or should I shop around for this type of service? When asking for quotes on this service, do I just have to say "Automatic transmission - oil and filter change"? Is that all I need to do change oil and filter for the transmission or are there other services that should be done with this?

Also, any idea on what is a fair hours for a shop for this type of job? How much should it cost? I am hoping just an hour and whatever supplies they used but I'm seeing online that Transmission Flush could be done in an hour... whereas some places online say a Transmission Flush could be 4 hours.

Also, if I do take it to an independent shop, should I provide the Transmission Fluid/Oil, is there a recommended Product for the GLk250 transmission fluid or does it not matter?

Looks like you in Canada. In USA, as part of the Diesel lawsuit, the AEM fix had a line item for transmission oil replacement. I believe this might be the same as transmission service?
someone please correct me.

If canada has a AEM fix coming up, you may want to verify this to save some $

Thanks for the tip. That’d be great if it’s covered. Haven’t heard about the AEM fix / lawsuit, is that the same as being discussed in this thread:
https://mbworld.org/forums/glk-class...t-site-up.html

if so, I got that done but my understanding was it only covered items related to emissions.

also wondering if Transmission oil change is consider the same as a transmission service.

It’s a time consuming and expensive job since MB and their ****ed up thinking made the transmission so you can’t check the level from the top or fill it from the top. You have to pump it in from the bottom and monitor transmission temp until it reaches the proper temp then it can be sealed. Maybe 700$ at Mb.
I paid 400 from an independent mechanic . A real bone headed move by MB to seal the transmission.

So if you ever notice a drip and want to check the level , that will cost you a few hundred. Real dumb MB !

I got my driveline fluids replaced at 62k miles, by an Indy shop in Chicago. I think I paid $450 or so, and that included the correct gear oil and new filter.

It's due for another drain & refill now, just put it off since we're not driving very much these days.

That does sound like a bigger job that it should be. Did the independent shop need to order and use MB parts/fluids for this job? Is draining the oil and replacing in the method you describe defined as the Transmission service that the GLKs require?

It was called Norwood Auto Service, north-end of town. They also replaced a front half-shaft on my VW, did a great job there too.

Mercedes Benz fluids are not needed. MB has a long list of approved fluids. Shell makes an excellent ATF for MB transmissions. I would recommend using an MB filter or one by the same manufacturer as the original (MB doesn’t actually make the filters) because the cost difference is small and it’s not something that is easily accessible. An independent shop specializing in MB or at least German cars should know what fluids and parts are required.
The fill procedure is, however, the only way to assure that the level is correct.
Good or bad, almost all manufacturers are going to sealed auto transmissions, not just MB.

It’s filled from the bottom. The Motor has to be running inside on the lift until the transmission reaches a specific temperature, only then can the level be finalized. Yes it’s complicated.

Dealers easily charge over 700$ , my normal mechanic refused the job.
I bought my fluids and filter from FCP euro. So I know they are correct. it is a job that needs to be done.

2½ year old estimate. It might be higher now, but just get it done. It’s a lot less expensive than ANY transmission repair.

I did it myslef, ordered the proper trans fluid, I believe its blue. check the specs. drop the pan, clean, replace gasket and filter (i think it was a while ago). bolts are one time use i replaced them as well. installed pan and gasket and new stand off. the stand off snaps to the inside of the pan and sets the level. u need an adapter or pump to pump the fluid in from the bottom. run the trans to temp, I think its 45C but verify. then pull drain bolt and expect about 200ml to come out. this is just a brief idea how to. its not a terribly hard job. with some research and adapter its doable.

I took mine to a well trusted MB independent mechanic. It was about an $600 job. Included a replacement transmission cover. All OEM parts and MB fluids. I let my go until I could feel the transmission struggling to shift through its gears. Don't do that. Runs like a beauty now.

I would do all of the driveline fluids at the same time, not just the transmission. Do the transfer case, both front & rear diffs. I would make sure that they also get the fluid out of the torque converter.

You want fresh fluids all over, then you can safely and easily do at least another 60-80k on the new stuff.

From what I can see (I've been searching for specifically Transfer Case fluid replacement on 4matic 722.9 NAG-2 transmissions) the transfer case is sharing ATF fluid with the rest of the transmission. There is no seal in between from what I can see on diagrams... I also checked physically, I can't see a drain bolt at the back of it either. Is that correct to assume that changing fluid in transmission will also change the fluid in the Transfer Case?

Mine is coming up soon (106K kms now, service manual suggests doing @ 120K kms but I'll do it earlier)

I have had my trans and transfert case oil done a month ago and my trusted mechanic told me that they shared the transmission oil.

For a 4wd the front and rear differentials are separate and use different oils, the front differential is separate from the transmission by about 2 feet, the differentials use Gear lube , the only two components that are together are the transfer case and transmission.

According to the MB service schedule I was given by a tech, ithere are locking 4Matic differentials ('Off-Road Package') that require additional servicing that regular 4Matics do not. As far as I know, the 'Off-Road Package' was never offered on USA model GLKs.

I did it on my 2013 GL250. Much easier than my '05 Jag XJ8L. Because the 250 has the integrated fill gizmo on the filter pan (which is replaced), it was MUCH less of a hassle. My only problem is that the manuals say you can rotate the crankshaft to reveal the torque converter drain plug. Two issues with that: 1. There's no way / tool to attach to the crankshaft to rotate it (and I wonder if I could manually rotate it with diesel compression), and 2. The 2013 GLK250 does NOT have a torque converter drain. So I only was able to replace what was in the pan. I'm at 110k miles, so time to do it again..... sigh..

Well, there was just a recall on them where they had to service the transmission because of a possibility of an incorrect part being in them. At least that's how mine just got serviced for free.
