Extra tow capacity? Why? I don’t think so, you will have less since it’s all going through one differential , one drive shaft, one axle . Better handling? why? I don’t think so. Better braking? Why? I don’t think so. Better fuel economy? Yes a bit. The system is one of the lightest and most advanced systems. I think it would be a wasted expense to remove it. And you might leave things exposed that could cause more damage. Remove the drive shaft and wheel shafts and you have open splines that would collect everything . Resale value would drop. How much lighter, well the whole 4wd system is maybe only 200 lbs so you would not save much, maybe 100lb. And if it actually did everything better like you think then the specs from mb would show it.

It's not something I pay any attention to. There must be some but the sales figures for compact SUVs show that about 80% in the Northern US and Canada are AWD.

You think backwards, tow capacity is about drivetrain strength. If you cut it in half , then what happens ? If your theory was correct MB specs and independent reviews would have noted it.

I've read approximately four threads in here about this - I mostly did the search cause I'm bored at the moment and a bit curious.

I would NEVER consider doing this. The expense and headache and the custom-built components required, and components that have to be swapped ... you're WAY better off selling your current GLK and buy a RWD version.

I have been home-wrenching autos and motorcycles for 40 years, including ground up restorations, including full rebuilds of various components. I would NEVER recommend doing this, even if you knew a professional shop that's done this 2+ times. Too risky, and whatever benefits you think there are, don't exist.

better off just getting 2WD GLK (way cheaper). You'd need need different transmission and those need to be programmed to ECU.

If I had time I would try putting 550 2WD drivetrain from likes of E550, that'd be a cool AMG GLK.

An my guess is AWD on GLK is way under 100lbs....2 axles, front diff, short prop shaft, small transfer case - that's about it.

Get the RWD

I love this car so much. I drove my 2014 C300 between Austin and San Antonio a lot, great car, sportier, I tended to drive more aggressively. Switched to A 2015 GLK350 because I needed more room.

I love the RWD, such a plush, relaxing ride

yea even less than I thought. 55 lbs is like half tank of gas, negligible.

Not necessarily. That is the difference in weight between the two vehicles overall. There may be other differences between the two which contribute to the near equal weight.

The 2wd version might have a stronger drivetrain to tow the same weight . My new front driveshaft was fairly light, maybe 12-15 lb,

If I had to do it over or get used GLK I would go 2WD. It eliminates are few weak spots associated with 4matic.
But I must say that GLK AWD is excellent in snow. I have never gotten stuck on 20 inch all-seasons in snow/ice. Very impressive given the tires. The car must be a tank on proper snow tires.

You are...there won't be any noticeable difference whatsoever. Smoother ride will come from smaller wheels and better tires.
