Check Engine Light on After Running Out of Gas

Check Engine Light is on After Running Out of Gas…. Yesterday I was in a questionable part of town and thought I could make it to the gas station. Never in my 36 years of life have I ran out of gas… literally ran out of gas completely, engine stalled and I had to coast into a parking lot. A very nice man brought me some gas, but it was mid grade fuel, not premium. Being frazzled and stressed I did not start the car properly. I immediately started cranking and pressed gas pedal to give it a boost. It started up and now the check engine light is on. Only a small amount of gas was put in and I went to gas station and filled up with premium fuel the rest of the way.

Any advice as to why the check engine light is now on / how to remedy myself? I’m sure it has a lot to do with how I started the vehicle up again. ??? Air in the fuel line?

If your gas cap is loose or bad you might get a light, if it runs ok just drive it , it should go away. Running out of gas will overheat the fuel pump and suck up all the crap on the bottom. Not to smart. I wonder how the fuel filter is.

Yeah, definitely not my finest moment running out of gas and I know better. Very embarrassing to say the least haha It seems to be running okay. I have no idea about the fuel filter without having it checked by someone else. I will try driving for a while and hopefully it goes off.

Running out of gas could result in trouble codes for fuel/air mixture, misfire, low fuel pressure in either the low or high pressure systems, or a couple of others. Depending on what sensor set the CEL, it could go off as soon as 3 starts, but maybe many more. If it’s an active code, it won’t go off. If it doesn’t, go to a major auto parts store and have codes read for free. Repost with results. Here’s hoping we won’t see a bad report.

The mid-grade gas is not a problem in a non-turbo engine. Don't worry about that.

have the code scanned dude... It's probably p0087 unabble to build low fuel rail pressure. To explain further: your car has 2.5 fuel pumps. 1 is the filter and that wants to keep the fuel tank level with fuel as will as filtering it. The next pump is the one that sends fuel from the fuel tank to the third fuel pump which is the high pressure fuel pump on the back of the engine, If the low pressure pump cannot build pressure that satisfies the high pressure pump, it throws a code
