Won't shift out of park.

Got into my vehicle to go home today and it started fine. Everything works perfect but it will not shift out of park. Tried restarting the vehicle and such. Nothing. Stalk shifter seems to not be hard to manoeuvre up and down. It's a 2013 glk350. Any ideas? I am a mechanic and I do have a good scan tool. Haven't scanned it but I thought I would ask here first before I dig into it tomorrow.

That's an oxymoron :)

How's the battery?
A battery that's even slightly less with its proper reading can cause strange things.
It's amazing how a battery, even slightly weak, can cause various issues

Have you tried turning the key to On position (not Start), then to Off then to On, then to Off.
Then try again ?

Did you try the paddles ?

How's the weather ? Really really really cold? That can sometimes cause of issues.

Believe it or not I tried it again after a buddy drove me back to my vehicle. Worked perfect. I can't see it being a undervoltage thing cause it worked only after running my vehicle for 10 minutes until I got frustrated with it. I will load test my battery tomorrow and see what it says. I didn't try the paddles or anything really else with it at the time. Hopefully it isn't a persistent problem. It's cold here -10 C. But it's worked when it's -45. Cold Saskatchewan weather. Thanks for the quick reply. Going to throw on the Zeus scanner tomorrow see if there is any stored codes.

My 13 battery was not fully charging and almost died from a worn out alternator regulator, the brushes were worn so much there was very little spring pressure on the brushes. Only 70,000 miles . Several things can lead to a weak battery.

Interesting. Ya I will see what the alternator is putting out under heavy load tomorrow when I load test the battery. I guess I'm used to working on mostly domestic. And am new to the more suave German engineering.

Just check the battery completely, if it’s fully charged and passes a load test, then it’s not the battery . Shutting it off rebooted it so hopefully it’s a one time thing.

A couple of folks with the same problem have mentioned the same thing :
They waited about 20 or so minutes, then it worked. Both reported the prob was sporadic.

One person replaced the battery and never had the issue again.

Unfortunately, others who have reported the prob never followed up to say how the prob was resolved :/

Skiddy, , there are a number of posts on this problem. I had the same problem with my 2013 GLK. The problem is usually either the shift Assembly adjacent to the steering wheel or a servo assembly which receives the electronic signal from the shift assembly and shifts the transmission. Pull the codes, amazingly, there are separate codes for each problem. I first replaced the secondary and then primary battery as the codes indicate low voltage to the two assemblies noted above. When that didn’t resolve the problem, I replaced the shifter assembly at the steering wheel and that solved the problem.
