GLK wheel hub replacement vs retap threads

Hopefully someone can give me some guidance on this. I found that when I was swapping my 20" wheels to 17" wheels the threads had been stripped on one wheel bolt. I swung by my local independent shop and was advised a new hub would run approximately 900.00 including parts and labor. The hub itself was about 200.00 and the balance in labor. I looked up some videos online and saw that a 14x1.5 tap is an option. If so, do I need to gat the correct thread pitch, or they all the same. Also, is the GLK a through hole or blind hole? Is this a temporary fix or will I eventually need to replace the hub? Thanks in advance.

Thread pitch is important. European pitch can be varied.

I'm slightly shocked that resistance was not felt when threading in the different lug bolts. I would have tested the bolts FIRST, BY HAND, before bolting up the wheels.

If it was my car, I'd look up the proper thread pitch for the vehicle, and re-tap the hole. Then I'd get a new bolt (obviously) and install the wheel, tightening carefully to the correct torque. Then I'd re-check the torque every few days to see if that bolt loosened up.

I'm guessing it won't.

The possible downside is that if you take the car to the mom-and-pop tire place, the three-whisker kid installing the bolts with his impact wrench set to "crush" could strip the threads again.

My lawyer suggested that I don't tell you that lots of cars drive forever missing a lug bolt altogether, so I won't tell you. ;-)

FWIW, I don't think a hub replacement is a horrible DIY job, but (thankfully) it's one I haven't had to do.

Perfect. Thanks for the information. When watching the videos it did not look that difficult to re-tap the hole. It seems like it is worth the effort and nothing to loose. The worse case is that the hub needs to be replaced if it does not hold a torque. Although, $700.00 in labor seems on the high end, but perhaps more involved than it seems. Might get a second bid if hub is needed. Thank your lawyer for me.

The hub will probably have to be tapped a size bigger since it’s already stripped , a shop dealing with big trucks will probably have the best knowledge. Weld it while you wait ,

A pro shop might just weld it in . Commercial truck shops deal with this because trucks run 5 -10x longer than cars .
