Switching from GLS350 to GLS450
 

My dealer called me that GLS350 is delayed. Not only can't I get an allocation yet, but the delivery of other earlier GLS350 orders can't be confirmed yet.

If switching to GLS450, I can possibly get a manufacturing date in July.

Looks like I have to switch to GLS450;
What do you think? Is it worth to wait for one month or two? Or switching to GLS450 right away?

You should ask yourself why you went with the 350 in the first place. As long as the benefits of buying a 350 do not outweigh the the benefits of a 450, I would definitely make the switch. For example, is fuel economy more important to you than power delivery? At the end, you are the one behind the wheel. Make the right choice.

How long do you plan on keeping the car?

I got the call from Vancouver dealer too, I am staying with 350. Either way I am late for delivery of the car before my baby's due date. So no rush, I think they sales just want to get pay soon as possible use the tatic of saying the wait will be very long.

I usually drive the car 10 to 12 years, I think diesel will hold its value better. But if you leasing it it will be personal preference.

I noticed the Canadians in this forum struggle with which model to get and I think that is in large part due to the fact you guys have more options available to you. You can option out a 350/450 leaving you wanting for nothing when compared to what the 550 comes with.

In the US, if you want AMG styling, you need the 550 or the 63. That, and the big V8, are the big determinants for us.

very true, I almost switch to a 550 order last week. But for me personally I do not want to gas up every 3 days with the 550. And I have other car to drive around so no point of getting another big engine. 550 is great, don't get me wrong just I personally never own a diesel vehicle want to try it out. Hopefully I won't regret my choice and the wait.

I was at the dealer today as they called me over the weekend with the issue of the GLS350. I have a build date of June and delivery late July early august. he showed me the memo from MB Canada and the 350 will be delayed to the fourth quarter with a possible delivery of December. So MB is offering me to take a 450. I am leasing and normally the 350 blue technology has a higher residual and therefore more attractive on the monthly payments. MB apparently has increased the residual on the 450 to match the residuals of the 350 to confirmed orders of 350 because of the massive delay. I am not sure what to do. This is our third GL350, it's for my wife and kids and have really got used to the 1000km per tank. I am ot sure how much worse the 450 mileage would be, obviously less than the 350 but not sure how much. I need to make a decision within the next two weeks.

Take these numbers with a grain of salt, but the German site says the 350 consumes 33 mpg (blended, city/highway) while the 400 (equiv of 450 in US) consumes 26 mpg. This is using their methodology for consumption which is more optimistic than that which is used in the US.

Regardless of whether you ever achieve either number with either vehicle, the difference between the two is definitely noteworthy and material.

Just a heads up if you are giving consideration to a 500/550 given the 350 delays. I've been very pleasantly surprised on all fronts with the exception of one: mpg.

I'm averaging some especially atrocious numbers. 9.5 mpg in an about-town cycle that I typically average say 13.5 mpg in a SC Range Rover. 30% worse is pretty incredible and I've been running in ECO mode and also Comfort pretty much 100% of the time.

The Benz was rated 14/18 so we'll see what I get on the highway in cruise control at 70 mph. Able to get 25 out of the Range under those circumstances

Don't panic just yet, I am sure you know that you usually have to go through about three tank fulls to start to see the real mileage. Consumption is at its worst for the first couple, then you will steadily see it get better. Keep us posted!

Please keep us updated on your MPG. I'd be okay with 12.5 mpg in the city, but under 10 would be quite low.

second tank has gone by at 12.5-13, so right where you'd want it, and more in line with what i'd expect, long term, for city/suburbia driving

Dealer in told me today GLS350d is starting to be tested now. They took it as a good news.

our Cayenne diesel gets US 21mpg average around town, but US33mpg on the open road, with a best of 39mpg [6lt/100km , UK47mpg]coming home from skiing, 5 in the car with roof racks & 1 pair of skis, quite astounding!
fortunately no delay on the GLS diesel to OZ.

Very good. Kinda sad I'm okay with 12.5 mpg. Hooray for cheap gas...
