US GLS350d

Sometime 1st qtr 2017 is a best guess -
"Mercedes-Benz will no longer seek certification to offer diesel-powered versions of the C-Class, GLC, and GLE. The C300d 4Matic will not be offered for 2017"
But the GLS350d survives and appears to be first in line submitted for certification -
"Mercedes' priority is securing EPA certification for the V-6 diesel in the GLS350d"
"As such, we are concentrating initially on the certification of the six-cylinder diesel (GLS),"

Good question!
I would think so, that's when the new models would roll out. I wonder now many 17 models they have sitting around they cannot sell yet.
My buddy says it has been quite the delimma for dealers.

Just called buddy for update again this past Saturday. Says the 18 model will be released in September this year now. No 17 models. Not for sure but may have order guide by mid July for ordering.
This was for US versions of the GLS 350d

We've orderd a gls350d back in Nov 2015 (has VIN) and been waiting for over 15 months. I know mb is still waiting on epa's certification for the 2017 diesel model. Do you think they'll name it the 2018 model but really it's still the 2017 model once epa gives them the green light to sell? Can they do that and change the VIN?

Quick answer.. no 2017's can't be marketed as 2018's... and 2018's can only be tested/reviewed from production models which will be test/manu mid-June.
Frankly - sometimes "friends" can have limited info... for example 2017 Sprinters with BT6 have NOT been approved by EPA either yet..submitted November.. now maybe June.
MB can't raise a stink .. it's EPA . EPA has not assigned a target profile.. reviews vehicle test profile .. says "nope" - reprofile and resubmit - MB says "if we can reprofile to this..will it be suitable" .. "EPA says - resubmit for testing with new profile and we will review and tell after our testing"...resubmit, EPA changes testing procedures... so "no, doesn't pass" reprofile and resubmit.... positively zero motivation for EPA to approve anything, much less approve Euro approved standard which would be EZ and Global concious....I don't have much hope, really..

2014 GL350
I guess it is better to assume that diesels will not see the light of day any time soon or ever....I guess I will hang on to 14' 350 until it falls apart and it has to be towed to the junk yard.

Really could be a damn shame for diesel enthusiasts... fact is the commercial trucking industry is the balancing force with Fed Regulatory for that HUGE diesel segment... in consumer diesel vehicles there isn't a coherent consumer group/association to balance out the regulatory nonsense for passenger rigs... on top of that VW diesel owners are taking their money and switching back to gas models "really" without a whimper since VW took the whole load on their shoulders ...VW owners haven't even sued the Fed's/yet-if-ever..

So what will happen to all those cars sitting on the lot in 'Bama that had already been produced ? Will they now be modified for export and offloaded upon unuspecting foreign customers ?
There must have been a point when they thought certification delay was just going to be a few weeks so they kept making them?

I've been thinking about that comment for a while, but it doesn't really answer the question. I'm sure that anything not shifted when the model year runs out will need to be 'managed'
However, there would still be quite a few '17 cars, originally reserved for the US/Can market, which can be modified with - say - new lights and ECU programming and then be sold outside the US as long as the '17 model year is stil 'actual'.
Anyhoo, I've ordered an AMG exterior package on my 350d, so I'm pretty sure they won't be shipping me a 'leftover' US car.
Well, one can hope !
