Our 580 is DEAD and completely unrepairable
Our GLS 580 suffered sudden brain death while having a suspension computer module replaced. Despite all efforts it is totally kaput. MB will be buying it back. Its a pity. I loved the car and was superb in all respects. 45k miles.

Sorry to hear that! What are you considering for the next car?

In fact, its demise has been curiously auspicious. Im retiring and thus downsizing. Im replqcing it with a CRV hybrid touring. We bought a hybrid sport for our daughter and it's a superb vehicle. Rides well, is quiet, very roomy for passengers and cargo and provides great milage. Its only demerit is its less than stellar highway acceleration. Equipped to the gills 42K. Compared to the GLC we have been using as a loaner for almost a month now, its a little less luxurious, a little slower when poked but much more comprehensivly equipped for about 12k less. I'll be keeping my EQS580 that, luckily, has had no uses as of yet. It will also facilitate maintenance since the nearest dealer is 2 miles away instead of 90!

I'm surprised the difference is only $12k! An RDX would have been sportier for sure but you can't beat a hybrid for fuel economy!
Downsizing is always a nice problem to have!

Lastly, since we live in mid Wisconsin, I upted to have the vehicle delired with Michelin CrossClimate tires, probably the best motoring deciscion Ive ever made, the only tires that I that I have ever owned that offers true any-weather excellent performace even deep snow! Its not a "sports tire" but rather more of a "touring" one. However its quiet, handles well and for the first time ever, saves me from swapping wheels every darned winter! It fits tge demeanor and purpose of the CRV to a T.

Did your GLS have the E-ABC suspension?

Thanks. Sorry to hear about the loss of your GLS. What problem(s) did you have to bring your vehicle in for service? Just curious because I have E-ABC so I'm hoping this is just a one off issue or if I should be looking for signs.

One morning the suspension just woke up inoperative. The vehicle was drivable but on anything but smooth pavement the ride was nervous and uncomfortable. The E active suspension makes the car handle great and smooth at the same time, when the system goes bad, the car drives fine but its neither smooth nor well controlled. Its not dangerous nor unstable though.

a comparably equipped GLC would be more like 20k more. The RDX is also very nice but fuel economywise its a lot thristier. What is a welcome surprise on the new CRV hybrid is the level of overall refinement. The interior is not luxurious by any measure but nice abd well put together, nothing looks feels or operates "cheap". Even the LED headlights are excellent something which old CRVs were notorious for cheaping out on. On the sport hybrid model, the only thing that is quite awful is the audio. The touring model's upgraded one is much, much better. Ive bought now a total of 4 CRV's in the last 20 years 3 for the kids abd now one for our own use it has always been a leader in its segment by offering a comprehensive "goodness". The latest hybrid one simply continues that tradition, but now that continous improvement has taken it to a a higher level.

Even with more aggressive tires I quickly lose interest in that Hybrid after 45-mile trips from Athens to MB of Atlanta NE in Duluth down highway 316 that always has a good amount of Traffic and Stop Lights at major intersections. It is fun trying to maximize fuel economy in Town...think I even was awarded a Trophy once! It would drive me nuts to drive that CRV Hybrid on a major Interstate at 65-80mph. We gifted Daughter wife's old 2019 Buick Encore when she started her DoD job in Maryland. She just moved to Virginia to work for Microsoft just outside DC.
CRV is a great utility especially with AWD. Our 2005 CRV SE lasted until 2019 until it was T-Boned and totalled by a F350 Super Duty pickup that was doing 60 in a 35mph zone. Still got a $7500 check for the Salvage!
Was not a fan of the 2022 GLC brand new Loaner that I drove for nearly 3-months and 4000 miles all around the State of New Mexico. The puddle lights were interesting. Good Luck and happy motoring!

Are you saying they bought it back for full price you paid?? Was it brand new when you got it?

Sorry to hear. 45k miles isn’t the best, longevity-wise. In MB’s own marketing parlance, that means it’s nothing. Sadly for owners.

MB should really stop offering the EABC. It's been more trouble than it's worth!

At least they're owning it and trying to treat the customers right. Hope it works out.

This is the first time I've read about catastrophic E-ABC issues. Any idea of the year of that S class?

Here is a video of the dancing demonstrating how fast the suspension can react, usually air suspensions are slow going up and down:

It was a game changer given how fast it was able to raise and lower and the ability to enable "free-driving control/assist" which might help if you are stuck with no traction. That said, the take-rate was super low and given forum member's Streamliner's experience, it was not most comfortable suspension.

The tech is ultra-impressive but my takeaway remains the same: that looks like it'll cost an "arm and a leg" to fix! The possibility for something to go wrong is high since it's doing athletic things that cars normally shouldn't be doing!

Air suspensions were never budget friendly to fix, it can easily be more expensive to repair than the car's value or at least a huge portion of the value after a couple of years.

Did you get any errors on the dash.
A few days ago I got a suspension malfunction error (see images below). Dealer checked it out and said it was condensation on the camera which was cleaned.
After reading your experience, I am really concerned.
I already had the 48v battery replaced within 2 months of delivery in Aug 2021 after the car just wouldn't start in the garage and had to be towed in.
