Synthetic ATF vs regular Dex III for Xfer case?

I am doing the major tuneup and fluid change on my 2001 ML430 with 111K miles on it, and have read the articles on the fluid recommendation for the transfer case being Dexron III. Should I use regular Dexron III or Mobile 1 ATF Synthetic which is compatible with Dexron III? I went ahead and drained it tonight. The fluid that came out was black, and original, which I figure was synthetic, so I am thinking synthetic would be best to put back in. The manual simply says use Automatic Transmission Fluid - same as what it says for the transmission itself. I am going to let the dealer do the tranny since it seems I never can get a pan gasket to seal again no matter what type of vehicle it is without a slight leak which annoys me terribly. Recommendations on Dexron III for transfer case?
