I made my own intake for my ML55 recently. I also remove the little intake buffer box and plugged up the connecting hose with a 35mm film canister. Didn't really do much. Power is about the same. MPG is about the same. Didnt have much intake sound either.

The F5 intake is not really a CAI since it is still inside the engine bay without a heat shield. I would call it a short ram intake. Perhaps some exhaust work may help

Here is a picture of the F5 intake.

seriously, my intake doesn't make any sound even with the baffle off. well, not that me as the driver can hear any. I was a little disappointed. The intake in my 540i at lease made some sound.

Let me take that back. I just went for a drive to prove myself, It made a little sound at 5000 rpm. which doesnt happen too often.

Intake MOD

how much of a difference is there to the intake growl? A friend just picked up a ML55 and commented that intake already sounded nice but not very loud (he is deaf I guess) - any chance of a wav file?

keep up the good worK!!

you guys must be deaf!!!

hey I don't know, The way I had mine setup in the beginning there was a significant amount of intake noise!!!!! (Almost exactly the same as fkongs)throttle response was much improved as was performance & mileage.

After installing heat shield and other junk it has quited doesn't some but not a whole heck of a lot. try going with a bigger less restrictive filter. I had at least four different setups before I found the one that I liked the best.

Actually that is a Fujita F5 intake photo from the F5Air.com website. I'm still working on my intake. Need a better reducer. It is not a Polish pipe. My Pipe is Carbon Fiber.

My handmade sounds deeper. But I need to clean it and add a heatshield as the thing is filthy.

forget about bending pipes. Just get some Intercooler piping kit from ebay you can probably make 2-3 intake pipes with it and with all the bends and hose you need. They are for DIY FMIC so there is a lot of pipes in a kit. Kits are $50-$90 before shipping. they come in 2.25, 2.5, 2.75 or 3" ID.

There is enough space next to the radiator in the passenger side to snake a pipe thru to the front of the radiator for real CAI

my design brings it behind the left fog light... I have it already bent and test fitted using stainless steal exhuast piping

I would have some reserves in installing the filter in front of the radiator...

Why?. Actually it would be above bumper height so it would be worry free if you ever get into deep waters.

The filter would have to be pretty flat to fit in front of there.

after your engine has been running a while, put your arm down through the engine bay and even down, past the plastic fender liner... THERE is where you will find, cold air, even after your engine has been running for hours... its always cold

Also the filter would stand to be about 18" off the ground still at that point, so unless your wading a river, hydrolock isnt an issue...
