Here is a fairly good site for codes by manufacturer.

Greetings again !

Since my first post on this thread, I finally had my 2002 ML 320 ran through a Starr diagnostics (USD105). I should update up to 115,XXX miles now and the last few months the dreaded "3 Lights of Doom" have illuminated off and on (ABS, ETS, BAS/EPS).

So here are the codes that got spit out:

EGS P2001 (EGS control unit)

ME P20DD-001 (Pedal Sensor)

ESP C1401 (High pressure return pump)
ESP C1140

BAS C1025

The Indie said he was able to clear the EGS and Pedal Sensor codes.

Thanks for your response Maj. I don't have a print out from the scanner, only what was written down on the work order.

No problems ever with the shifter and no I don't own a scanner.

For what's worth, about two months ago there was a soft "whee" like a penny or circus whistle starting with a high note to a low note coming from where the pump motor is located. I've never heard that sound prior since owning the vehicle. The Indie said to replace the computer at a cost of around USD800 for the part plus labor. Otherwise the car runs great, good power, smooth idle, shifts well and for 13 years old she still looks great inside and out. The thing is though it does bug me that most of the safety features of this vehicle no longer are functional with the 3 lights on.

My sincere thanks and appreciation in advance for your feedback and suggestions. Should I have the pump motor removed and sent off for a re-build ? Or have the steering angle sensor replaced ?

Thanks again,

Klaus Jr.

EGS P2001 (EGS control unit)-EGS is the German acronym for Electronic Transmission Control, but code P2001 is for a problem in the EGR system. If it is indeed a trans. problem the correct manufacturer's code will be EP 2011 (see below). So this could be a typing error on your part or the tech. gave you the wrong info. Do you have a print out of what he gave you? Do you have any problem with you shifter?

ME P20DD-001 (Pedal Sensor)-It's obvious that you still have a Pedal Value Sensor problem or it is an old code that is still stored from you previous problem. Do you still have that problem and do you have a scanner of you own?

ESP C1401 (High pressure return pump)-This code tells you that the brushes in the return pump motor (A7) are completely worn down and must be replaced.

ODB-II has many protocols. Some popular protocols are J1850 PWM, J1850 VPW, ISO9141-2, ISO14230-4 (aka keyword protocol 2000), ISO15765-4/SAE J2480 and others. That's just the start of the OBD II systems. There are different connectors, different pin assignments and there are systems that support CAN BUSS and non can bus systems.

Our W163 ML's use the ISO14230-4/KWP 2000 protocol.

Therefore if you are using an ODB II tool that does not support the system and protocols of the vehicle you are scanning chances are you are going to get false readings/codes if it works at all.

Mike
