V6 vibration as rpm increases???

My 00 ML 320 V6 motor alwas seems to get harsh or vibrate as the rpm increases, is this normal? Alwas seemed to do this from new.

It doesn not spin freely in a smooth mannor but I have alwas just though this was the V6 design limitations.

Thanks!!!

Engine vibrations

My '98 has never vibrated. It's puzzling that you say it's been that way since new. If not, I'd say check the harmonic balancer or engine mounts.

Don't know what else to suggest. Have the dealer check it out. Still under warranty?

Thanks Greg,

More like it gets a bit buzzzzy as the rpms increase.

Just attribuite it to the V6 design as they are not by nature a smoooth motor.

However, if it has ballance shaft(s) (???)it should be smooth to red line I would think.

I had a wine that was like a transmission wine sence new then last monthe the dealer made it go away by replacing the belt or pully or somthing so I just don't know what to accept as normal.

Biggest irritation is the wind noise from the windsheld area.

Thanks Keith :hammer:

i think the vibration is normal...my 2000 320 does it too. but i have to say, my 98 didnt do it. im still pretty confident that its normal.

ahopter,

Thanks!

Again, it is more of a buzz than a vibration.

It gets the job done!

Just would not expect people in the E320's et al, to be happy with a motor that sounds kind of buzzy when one would expect it to sound more sweet in the higher revs!

V6 vibration

I agree with Greg - it might be the harmonic balancer or engine mounts.

I'd have it checked. If its the harmonic balancer, it will pay you to fix it now. When it goes, it could rip up your engine pretty bad. I've heard of $2k repair bills.

I would check the motor mounts and harmonic balancer..

I had the same symptom on my 2000 ML320...mild vibration especially on cold starts.

They checked it at the last service...and recommended changing the motor mounts...said my harmonic balancer was fine..

Since they changed the motor mounts..the vibration is gone..

just curious, how can the harmonic balancer cause vibration in higher rpm's?

My 03" 350 has this behavior when winding the motor out. Right before the 1-2, 2-3 and 3-4 shifts at approx 5gs, the motor sounds like a lawnmower. As far as I know this is inherent in the build of the the v6. The ML500's I drove did not wind out like this.

Thanks all, will keep the ballanceer & motor mounts in mind.

Good to know about the balancer weakness.

Driver55er , You prety much comfirm my feeling that it is the V6 design that is very dificult to make smooth.

Do we have ballance shafts? I don't know that we do.

Keith
