Transfer case slow leak. What options?
 

I have a 2003 ML55 with approx. 130K Miles.

I just noticed a few oil spots on my driveway. I think I have been able to trace the leak to the transfer case. it is a very slow seep, however it is certainly leaking.

What are my options? I assume I can remove the transfer case and separate it and add new seal? Are there any other options? I've heard of additives etc. to seal leaks through the ATF in the transfer case, however I've always been skeptical and afraid of ruining something.

Unfortunately there is no seal between the two halves. RTV sealant must be used.

Here is a teardown video by a professional and some old photos that I saved from another member who took it apart. Other things to consider after taking it apart is you might find that the chain is stretched, but it is available through Borg Warner.

This gives me an idea though. Could I drain the T Case and clean the area of the leaks, where the 2 surfaces meet. Then thinly "caulk" something like the RTV gasket in that groove? I guess it wouldn't hurt to try? What RTV type sealant would be strong enough? Or am I completely off the deep end

Loctite or 3M.
