p0442 Evap leak (small leak)

2003 ML350 Got a CEL and this code -

Changed the purge valve( Fuel System Regeneration Valve) to an OEM one, also did a vacuum test on it and it holds vacuum at at 15 inches. Does not hold vacuum under 5 inches, but I believe that is correct (please let me know if I am mistaken!)

Changed gas cap to an OEM and still kept getting code.
I also changed the EGR valve and still got the code.

Finally got smart and bought a makeshift smoke tester from Smoke-Tek on ebay (great purchase, only 100 bucks and well worth trading for the 3 hours it would have taken me to make one not as nice) --
I connected the smoke machine to the tube that goes to the purge valve under the hood, and the only place I see smoke coming out is the hose that connects to the rear vapor canister purge vent valve (photos attached.)

Now I am not sure whether that is supposed to happen, so I wanted to confirm with you all, and whether you think I should replace that / if smoke coming out there is normal.

I also wondered if the tube that goes from the purge valve to the crankcase could cause the code to come up. That slide in an out rather easily. Doesn't feel terrible loose or anything but just relatively easy to take in and out.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! thanks!

vapor canister purge vent valve in rear

open hose that connects to vent valve where smoke emit after test

That's what I am trying to figure out my dude.

I did receive some advice that the outlet in the hose depicted needs to be plugged, as it is indeed supposed to have smoke release through the rear valve. Another owner's experience with the similar code had his leak from the top area of his gas tank, where I will be working to expose.

It ended up being one of the breather lines (or regeneration line as WIS calls it) - 163-476-12-01 - pinned against that welded round bracket it apparently wore a hole over time. On the new hose I'm going to put some extra tape around that area as contact will continue in this unusually unpleasant design.

Line with leak
