As of MY 2002, they used a one piece antenna and requires the removal/lowering of the headliner.

I have never installed one, but I've removed about 20 from wrecked MLs. You first remove the plastic trim that borders the ceiling where it meets the rear hatch. That will expose the headliner. The next trick is to get under the headliner without ripping it. (I believe there are two large plastic bolts that can be removed).
You'll see three wires that need to be unplugged, and you'll then need to unscrew the large bolt with a socket (can't remember size, possibly 16mm). Once that comes off, hopefully the black plastic ring inside it comes off as well, and you can then pull the old antenna from the roof.
Getting under the headliner, without removing the entire thing (which is a nightmare job), is the only tricky part. I talked with a Mercedes mechanic who said they used to fix the sunroofs on MLs by putting a 2x4 between the headliner and the roof while working on it...I wouldn't do that, but it's one technique. I might be removing one this thursday, so I'll video what I'm talking about, which should make it a lot clearer.

I shot a quick video of how you access the screw holding the antenna to the roof. You can watch it here:

Just to clarify, I'm using a large screw driver because the ML is in the junk yard...you'll obviously want to be more careful when removing the trim and the plastic screw holding the headliner in!
