ml320 rear driveshaft problem

hello everyone. i have a 2000 Mercedes ml320.i have been hearing a grinding in the undercarriage of the vehicle. with research from here i have seen most people say its the rear driveshaft carrier bearing. i took it to a local mech and he says i need a whole new rear driveshaft and that the carrier bearing cannot be replaced as it a part of the rear driveshaft and cannot be replaced without replacing the whole rear driveshaft. The car is still drive-able so i was wondering if i need a rear driveshaft the car wouldn't drive but not sure, if someone can help me with any advice or technical knowledge of this issue about diagnosis, repair, or anything that might help i would really appreciate it thought i would check here before i buy the rear driveshaft.thanks.

Your mechanic lied to you or does not know that the center support bearing can be replaced.

he might not of known. maj. do u know if the rear driveshaft was bad would the vehicle move? im trying to figure out if it could be the support bearing alone that needs replacing or the whole rear driveshaft.

shaman369,

respectfully, If your mech "..might not have know", then you need to run away from him as far away as you can, unless you really want to throw money at him.
Do what was suggested to you in your other post.

Optionally, do a search on "w163 center support bearing replacement" and read, read, read for yourself and learn more about your possible issue while you wait for responses...) :)

If he did;t know, it was his responsibility to call M/B parts dept. and ask them if the center support bearing is available and replaceable.

i agree with not returning to him as he was a run of the mill "guy down the road" mechanic that was just close to my house. i will be researching the bearing and maybe call th m/b part place myself.

Well, by the looks of your last post, you didn't include the year.

Best way to find out, low speeds very loud grinding sound higher speeds kinda goes away. I did many of my ML cars myself. Yes bearing can be replaced, ur mechanic lied or didnt know. If you were around Cleveland area id be happy to do it for you.
