Mine used alot of oil during breakin( almost 3 quarts)..which lasted almost to the first service interval.. once broken in it has used minimal oil and is almost due for its next service without adding any although it is down a bit on the dipstick.( full line to the add line is 2 quarts) You will see almost every vehicle on here have different useage when new and it depends on how its driven. If it still uses oil after it's broken in then there is other issues. As long as youre not seeing pools of oil under it and no huge clouds of smoke i would give it to 12k miles at least and add oil as needed. I have owned many diesels over the years and they take considerably longer to break in than gas motors Keep us posted on how it works out

My '08 used 1 quart in the first few thousand miles. Now at 14,000 miles, and no oil usage. Try another dealer.

thanks for the replies

I agree with the brake in period 10/12000 miles.
Here is my problem.. even if this is true 1000miles/Qt,
I dont think MB wants a SA tell the customers how normal this is!!!

I think the dealer needs a new SA

'14 E63S, '13 G550, '06 E320 cdi, and a bunch of other stuff.
on an 08 cdi.... no oil added at first (after-sales) service. this was performed with 2500 miles on the clock. i'm now at 3500 miles (five weeks after purchase) and still no indications of consumption.

PLENTY of other issues, but oil consumption does not appear to be one of them.

I have an '08 CDI. To the first oil change at 13,500Kms.(7,750mi.) of mixed driving it used about 1.5 litre(qt.) of oil. After the first oil change I drove from Vancouver BC to Palm Desert Ca. about 3,000Kms.(1850 mi.) at 70-75 mph and it used 1 litre (qt.) of oil! They do seem to use a little bit of oil when you push it over 70mph with mountain passed!

You're disturbed? %%$#@#@% I have an '08 R 320 CDI, it uses about a quart every 1000 miles. Normal according to Mercedes! How about the guy I try to dump the thing on when I sell it. It better be normal trade in value seeing how the repair record shows it has been looked at over 3 times now for excessive oil consumption. I have a VW Jetta TDI diesel and it has over 110,000 miles and has yet to burn a quart total.
Amazing that a company with such high regard and self opinion for their QUALITY would think 1 quart in a thousand miles is acceptable.

Oil Consumption

I hope that happens to me! At the rate I am putting in oil, the economy of the diesel is negated. I believe I am at around 14,000 miles right now.

Have you driven it hard at all? I firmly believe that pushing the engine hard after breakin helps to seat the rings better to minimize oil consumption.

My 2007 ML320CDI would use about 1/2 liter every 5,000 miles once it was broken in. FWIW, my breakin was to change the oil and filter at 1,000 miles, 5,000 miles and every 5,000 miles thereafter.

I probably drive it too hard. I like to travel at around 80 MPH on long trips, say 2000 miles or so. The last time I went in for an oil consumption test at the Service Center, they told me it was just the low level oil sensor and I need to have it replaced. Don't worry about it when it tells you "check oil at next fueling". I have 20 K miles on it. If it is just the sensor I wonder why the level is low on the dip stick? Best I guess not to check it at all and wait till something major happens and then take them to court.

Oil Consumption

PS. This is my 5th MB and all were good up to this point. I had a 300 TD, diesel. It never burned any oil and I talked to the present owner and he said it still doesn't at 300K miles.

There was a recall or TSB on the oil sensor. Check with the dealer if yours needs it. Mine did and the message never came back after replacement. I also verify that the oil is at the full level on the dipstick after an oil change, and not mid way as the dealers like to leave it. Are you using the approved oil? Mobil1 Formula M ESP? To date I have 61000 miles and have never had a consumption issue or been low on the dipstick. I have also never had to add oil during my 5000 mile change interval.

Oh, and no worries on hard driving. These diesels love it so... Drive it like you stole it! Just give the turbo about 30 seconds or so at idle to cool before you switch off!

I am going in Monday to have the sensor changed. I wonder why they never told me? It will be interesting if that is the answer. I love the car and do drive it like it has been stolen!!

Thanks
