Cool

Survey says:

Door pillar lists the tire size on the date of manufacture and the maximum load inflation tire pressure for the tires listed on the chart.
The gas filler door chart lists the maximum load inflation pressure that matches the maximum load inflation pressure on the door pillar.
The gas filler door chart also lists the light, or normal, load inflation tire pressure. By inferance and educated guess, this inflation pressure is also for the tire size listed on the door pillar.
All other tire sizes are anybody's guess and pure speculation. YMMV.
Or, you can do what my dad taught me: "I like to keep 35 pounds of air in the tires. They roll good and you get better gas mileage."
That is my story and I'm sticking to it.

Wayne

ps: Anybody taking delivery of a new vehicle: Check the tire pressure and have your dealer adjust them to the proper pressure & get the TPMS widgets to read correctly. When we got our new vehicle on 11-19-2011, the tires had 40 psi in them. Not cool at all.

The 21-inch wheels were part of the AMG appearance package, which was an option on Canadian ML550s in 2009.

You are correct about the wheels (9x21) and tires (265/40-ZR21 105Y). They are Continentals with a very aggressive performance tread pattern.

I just went into the garage and checked the pressure stickers. On the driver's door panel it says:

F: GVWR 1400 kg, pressure 32 psi
R: GVWR 1600 kg, pressure 39 psi
Spare: 60 psi
There is nothing about normal loads and heavy loads.

On the gas filler cap, it says:

Normal load: F: 32, R 32
Heavy load: F: 33, R 39
Warm tires up to +4 psi
Spare: 60 psi

roadrutz,

The tire size should be listed on the door pillar chart as well as the words Maximum Load above the column with the PSI numbers. Unless you are in Canada and the numbers are metric. OR, after consulting the terribly confusing Owner's Manual, there may be symbols for passengers & luggage to indicte relative loads as well as numbers for passengers in various rows of seating. Like 2-3-2.

If we put as much effort into solving Climate Change, we would all be wearing down parkas.
We should all call Cathy in New Jersey and ask her to speak to the technical folks and tell them to please get their STUFF together. Your numbers don't match. "The Horror!"

Anybody got their owner's manual handy? Start reading around page 350. Be prepared to be totally confused.

Wayne
35 psi worked for Dad & it will work for me in East Texas.

Mark,
Thank you for the interesting & useful information provided !

Jonathan,
I agree with you that the 32 psi seems to give the best ride quality. However due to the 'shape' of the rear tires I am still reluctant to drop the pressure from the 35 psi.

Considering your advice and Mark's info I will try to get the courage to lower the rear tires also to 32 psi. - Thank you

In the U.S., 2011 ML Owner's Manual there is listed an option for the ML63 AMG of R21 with '295/35 ZR21 107 Y XL' Summer Tires on '10 J x 21 H2' wheels. I do not know the particulars of the 21" tires fitted on the cars sold. But is an obvious difference from what roadrutz presents as the Canadian option.

My driver's door panel the sticker shows:

05/11 - which I assume that is the mfr date; and C040 - possible the car color?
GAWR Front: 1400 kg/3085 lbs; TIRES: 255/50 R19; RIM 8.5x19; cold: 230 kPa/32 psi
GAWR Rear: 1600 kg/3525 lbs.; TIRES: 255/50 R19; RIM 8.5x19; cold: 270 kPa/39 psi
GVWR: 2830 kg / 6235 lbs.
(No pressure for spare tire)
VIN #

The label on the gas filler cap:

normal load = F: 32 psi; R: 32 psi
Heavy load = F: 33 psi, R: 39 psi
Warm tires up to: + 4 psi
Spare tire = 60 psi

SO IT LOOKS THAT THE NUMBERS ON STICKERS ARE IDENTICAL FOR THE 21" AND 19" TIRES !!! => This puts some of the energy driving our debate to rest...

This time of year 34-35 psi offers a bit of security for wildly fluctuationg temperatures. Getting all 4 tires equalized on a medium temperature day in the 34-35 psi range allows for cold mornings at 32-33 psi or warm afternoons at 36-37 psi. Speaking hypothetically of course. Or am I missing something?
