Service D in 28 days Message in 2008 ML350
Hi All,
Can some one please help me to under stand what is service D and when I called Omaha,Nebraska Benz service center he quoted me 1050$ and he said it is a major service and you don't need to worry until 100K milleage. I felt like he is cheating.
Do I really need to do Service D. If yes then can I do it outside of benz service center if it is just a oil change etc or it is better to do it in service center?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Praveen

Service D
Not sure of your model but on my '09 ML 320 bluetec it amounted to a Service B plus a flush of the transmission and new filter which added $499.95 to the Service B tab of $399.95.

I did mine elsewhere from the dealer. Your paying a lot for Service D for a bunch of useless crap like 3+hr inspection. I just did a oil change and changed every filter. I was going to do a brake flush but my mechanic said I can hold if off a year since its not really bad right now.

There are certain items due at time interval and others at mileage interval. You didnt post the mileage, but D just refers to 4 hours of labor to complete the tasks. Most dealers have gone to a Major/Minor service schedule. Minor is every 10K miles and Major is ever 20K, with certain items due based on time IE Brake Fluid Flush. If you are at all handy, you can probably change the air filter and cabin filter yourself. Look at the maintenance schedule for your vehicle.

My ML is 2008
with millage of 33,600 And if I see in the menu it shows I still have 6 thousand miles for next service, where as in display every time I start the engine it shows I am due Service D in 26 days and keep on decreasing. I contacted Omaha NE dealer and he said it is a major service and it will cost 1050$ and I need not to worry until 100K miles and I called my local(Lincoln,NE) dealer and she said Service A and Service C will be minor and Service B and Service D will be major and interval between each service is 1 year of 10K which ever comes first
And she said for 850$ below service will be done at Service D
Oil and filter change
Replacement of air filter
Replacement of micro-filters
Replacement of cabin air filters
Replacement of front wipers
Perform diagnostics
Rotate and Balance all 4 tires
Lube the Chassis
Reset counter for 1 year or 10,000 miles
Perform the brake fluid service, done every 20,000 milesJ

Have you considered doing the work yourself if the price is too high? I'm also in Omaha.
Oil and filter change $40 (Fleece oil filter $10, Mobil1 0w40 $30)
Replacement of air filter $25
Replacement of micro-filters (same as cabin filter?!)
Replacement of cabin air filters $27
Replacement of front wipers $30
Perform diagnostics
Rotate and Balance all 4 tires
Lube the Chassis $0 (just grease gun)
Reset counter for 1 year or 10,000 miles $0
Perform the brake fluid service, done every 20,000 milesJ $13 (1L pentosin fluid)
So the total cost comes to $135 for all parts involved. This isn't rocket science either. For you to do the service yourself, it would probably take around 3hrs. That includes all setup, cleanup, figuring stuff out for the first time. Then again I don't know of too many people that flush brake fluid, change wipers and cabin filters every other year.

babyman1737,
Please tell me where you got 9qts of Mobil 1 0w40 for $30. I would like to buy a truckload at that price. The cheapest I have ever been able to get it was $7/qt at Walmart.

A second way I got 0w40 was at Advance Auto Parts. From time to time they run their "oil change special" for Mobil1, with a filter. 5qts and a filter for like $30. Because they do not stock (nor can order) a filter for my V12 S600, they give me $10 off the price to get my own filter. 5qts for $20, not bad!
In both circumstances, I be sure to load up on 10-15qts of Mobil1 at a time. I usually find these deals about 1 or 2 times per year. Keep your eyes peeled!

I just did my own D service, parts from MB, $146. Oil mobile one from Costco $76. (2 cases 12 qts, our 500 takes 9qts) filters were a snap to change, all in all took an hour and half.
