ML-350 Radio displays "Device Unavailable"

R350 location of control module???
I have been driving my car around for years with only FM 1 station working. I can connect my phone and play music with iTunes. Navigation works. Originally, I got the Device Unavailable message after a battery drain. Dealer wants $3000 to replace system. I want to find my control module to unplug it and see if that works but I cannot locate it. Does anyone know where it is on a 2009 R350??

It Worked! Thanks!
I rode around for a week with no radio. I even went to YouTube to see if I could find a solution. I didn't see one so I googled it and came here. It worked thanks!

I fumbled around a bit with the box on top (wrong box), re-read this thread and tried again. This procedure worked like a charm. THANK YOU!

Wondering if I have a Friday afternoon car....
I have a new (2 months old and 2k miles) C63S Estate. Just gone out and lo and behold, no radio and 'device unavailable' on the screen. I'll read back through this thread and see if the solution will work with my car.
Is the box in a similar position in an Estate? Is that a Station Wagon in the US?

Just so you guys know, that "box" you're talking about is the AGW or Zentrales Gateway. It has some hardware and software inside, including the radio tuner. It's also where the fiber optic loop is centralized and controlled. There are two versions that I know of, US and "Rest of the World".

After reading so many posts and getting confused in many of them today finally I have the problem resolved.
First my car does not have that box under the back seat. It has one in the trunk in the driver side and one fuse box on the trunk in the passenger side near of the battery.
None of then has that suggested connections to unplug and plug again.
After unplugging many of the possible connectors, nothing worked as suggested in many posts. I was going frustrated and almost quitting.
My last try was disconnect the negative terminal of the battery. When I did it I heard couple relays clicking as going off. For my happiness after this I reconnect the battery terminal again and my audio system worked again. I try radio, CDs, GPS, and whatever is part of the navigation system and all of them worked properly.
I am so thankful for all people that gave their suggestion because I know that they were wanting to help me. Many thanks for all posts.
There were people posting even photographs to make my life easy. Thanks

MBWorld Fanatic!
Battery died on me today while waiting for my wife to exchange something at the mall. Truck is a 2009 GL 450. Car was not running and kids were watching the tv's and I was listening to the radio and lost track of time. About 30 minutes later the car didn't have enough power to start. Got it jump started and then the radio, sat radio, volume , iPod all could not be recognized or not available. Thank goodness you wrote this post. I unplugged the power cable and the 3 fibre optic cables from the module labeled " Sirius XM HD Radio" for 10 minutes and plugged them back in just as you have all said. Started the car and just like magic it all worked again. Thank you so much.
OK I found out how to open the rear seat to find the sat module and I unplugged it and re-plugged in. same issue.
Is there a certain sequence to get this to work? All other functions on radio/cd/phone work. Since this is new to me, I can't remember if it always did this or used to have sound on the preview Channel, but trying to set up new service and can't get past this portion.

'11 ML350 with the same issue
Thank you all for posting about this issue. All audio in my 2011 ML350 bluetec stopped working last night for no obvious reason. Given the number off issues I had with this lemon, I was ready to send it to the junk yard. Anyways, I decided to give it a try and the suggested resolution worked like a charm. Attached are two photos I took doing the procedure. Thanks.

Radio display "Device Unavailable"
My 2009 E 350 does not have the box under the rear seat. I looked all over for it with no luck.
I finally disconnected the negative battery terminal in the trunk, waited a few minutes and reconnected it. Started the car and everything worked. I should have fried that earlier.

Device not available
So I’m having the same issue with my 2012 S550 seem to be working great one night and the next day it just stopped working. I tried to disconnect the cables from all of the device under the trunk but I didn’t find the continental command module I wonder where the battery is so I can try what you did. I also tried to see if it was under the seat but I’m not able to open it although it does have some
velcro you can lift up back there.
My next step is to locate the continental command module and unplug the wires from those and reconnect. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated thanks everyone!

Device unavailable
I was able to locate the command module. I unplugged everything waited a minute, plugged it back in but it didn’t fix my problem i also tried unplugging everything from the small antenna module next to it but it didn’t fix it either. Although I did see sos teleaid inoperative when I unplugged everything. When I plugged it back in all I got was device not available. What exactly did you unplug from the battery that helped it reset. Anybody that can help I can greatly appreciate it. I’ll leave everything unplugged for about an hour or so and check back later if it’ll work.

If removing the fiber optic cable does not work check all fuses and the luggage department especially the 7.5 amp fuse #39
will also give you Device Unavailable.
Good Luck
will also give you Device Unavailable.
Good Luck

Fixed my ML320 radio
Over 8 years later, this thread is still helping people. We have an old 2009 ML320 with an intermittent power drain. The battery died unexpectedly again last week, and after getting it running again, everything was fine except the radio no longer worked and displayed the "Device unavailable" message. After finding this thread, I went out to the garage and followed the excellent instructions from the original poster, gkuzyk. Sure enough, I could hear the module running under the back seat even though the car had been off for hours. The photos from drajac were helpful too, because they show the exact cable that needs to be unplugged. I unplugged the cable, and the module stopped running. Waited a minute and plugged it back in. No sound coming from the box now, just as expected based on the description from the original poster. Started the vehicle. The comand screen took a few seconds to turn on, and then a song began playing on the radio. Thank you MB World and all the smart people who contribute!

Device Not Connected in 2013 ML350

Thanks for your picture in the post.
This is not the quite correct subforum, but I thought it's worth appending. Google search will get you here.
I am experiencing the "device not connected" fault recently. While this is not the same as "device unavailable", it seems close enough. The symptoms are:
- 2013 W166 ML-350.
- Display shows "Device Not Connected" for all audio sources (radio, sat, Bluetooth, etc.).
- There is no audio from any sources, including navi - to me it implies the tuners, sat receiver and audio amp locked up.
- Navigation works, guides OK on screen.
- Voice command input for navigation works (seemingly slow), but no audio feedback.
Happened today again. After I found that in this model year the SAT receiver is under the driver's seat carpet, I disconnected main battery instead - for about 1/2 minute.
After restart, it still did not work.
2nd restart an hour later: it works. I do not know if this is due to the delay or a quite different issue.
I'll keep an eye on this. I cannot do anything for next couple of weeks, but then the plan is to replace main battery (sticker says it's from late 2019) and aux battery (will get a new one, it's such a pain to just get to it that I'll change it regardless). I'll post here any conclusions.
Robert.
