ML350 (w164) Performance Upgrades

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,

New member here. I just purchased an '08 ML350 and was wondering if there is anyone who can give advice about the best (and cost effective) ways to increase the performance.

I've heard about ecu tuning but I'm pretty skeptical unless there are some kits that are verified as good. I would also like to know about positive experiences with exhaust systems and air intakes. Basically anything I can do to improve performance I want to know about. I'm am a tuning novice, so bear with me.

Attached is a picture of the vehicle. Your help is greatly appreciated!

I just picked up a 2010 ML350 myself. Coming from a C300 (smaller N/A v6) and more recently, a C250 Coupe (Turbo 4cyl).

Knowing a decent bit about the modding scene, there is not much you can do to increase the performance of an N/A (Naturally Aspriated) engine. ECU tunes, intakes and exhaust will not give much of a benefit (especially when compared to the cost effectiveness).

Most of the modifications will be purely aesthetic and/or for the sound.

On my prior C300 (which was also N/A) I did x-pipe exhaust and intake which made it sound much deeper / throatier and more aggressive. While it probably wasn't much quicker, if at all - the mods will make it seem quicker as it is all an experience, hearing the exhaust rumble and intake growl.

Compared to my C250 coupe, I was able to tune the engine to provide more boost from the turbo, combined with a better intake and free flowing exhaust, the same mods yielded much better performance increases (50-75+ hp and tq).

Jctevere,

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into your suggestions because a throatier exhaust note is something I would also be interested in.

Does anyone else that has experience with ML350s have any ideas?!?

Forgot some stuff

Any brake or suspension upgrade suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to change out the brakepads soon and might throw new rotors on the fronts. In addition to the brakes, I might add spacers to give the vehicle a wider stance. Does anyone know of a reliable spacer brand?

I wouldn't mess with spacers, they just won't look nice on this car imo.
The stock brakes are amazing in my opinion. I got to drive a brand new one and it had awesome bite. Hawk hps makes good pads but i dont think you will notice much of a difference to be honest over a set of fresh pads/rotors.
I agree with what everyone else said as far as performance, mostly just for sound and aesthetics.

I also have a recently purchased 08 ML350-thought about it to, but like the posts state-a dead end. What's the mileage on your 08? thanks
