Rear Lift Gate Problem

Hello!
I just recently got a problem with my rear lift gate/tailgate.
It opens like normal. But the second I press the button to close it, the button light goes away and it does nothing!... The light in the button comes back on when I unpress it. Very weird in my opinion.
I can still close the tailgate/liftgate from the driver door without problems.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might cause this?

Sounds like a bad switch which a good body\chassis scan will corroborate.

Also, check the liftgate controller box in the rear. Mine got water into it and caused it to stop working.

I had the exact same issue as the OP:

I replaced the liftgate controller module which is on the right side below the spare tire and it fixed the issue. Water entry into the rear area ruined the controller module.

Star was showing an error that the liftgate buzzer was broken.

while mine is a GL550, same damned issue, except the front button won't close the rear either. The lock button works - but only locks the car, the liftgate won't go down unless....the car's been driven at least 15 minutes. Then it works fine. I need to test the battery; maybe the liftgate doesn't like low voltage from the battery? Or maybe the module is just beginning to die.

mine won't close unless the car has actually been driven. It implies a voltage issue, but there is that 2008 service bulletin about a wire that can work loose, and this liftgate control unit reprogramming that I'm not familiar with.

There's an in-between period, maybe 20min after the car has been driven, where pressing the "lock" button locks all the other doors on the car, but the liftgate won't close. Then the morning situation is that it opens under power, even before starting the car, but neither the "close" or the "lock" buttons work. Everything else, including the power folding 3rd row seats, work fine...although if you press both of them to close when the car's been sitting for more than 30min, sometimes one of them won't go all the way down and latch - it stops with a couple inches left to go.

The hatch opens automatically, every time.
